HEADMASTER, JONATHAN LANCASHIRE
In December 2008, Dean Close appointed its ninth Headmaster: Jonathan Lancashire.
Born in Yorkshire, Jonathan was educated at Malvern College where he obtained seven grade A passes at A level. He read Mathematics at St John's College, Cambridge and was appointed in 1984 to the staff of Radley College, Oxfordshire, where he taught mathematics for seven years, was a head of department and an assistant boarding housemaster.
At Radley he also ran an annual business management conference where he met a range of interesting characters from the business sector. This inspired him to return to the study books and pursue a qualification in accountancy. Once qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Coopers and Lybrand, his first bursarship was at Rishworth School in Yorkshire before coming to Dean Close in 2000. In recent years Mr Lancashire has served on national committees of the Boarding Schools Association and the Independent Schools Council Education Forum. He is a Trustee of the University of Gloucestershire and the Tewkesbury Abbey Choral Scholarship Fund and an enthusiast of choral music, singing in the School's Choral Society.
A keen sailor whose favourite cruising ground is the Hebrides, the Headmaster is also a qualified mountain leader who regularly visits the Lakes, Snowdonia and Scotland, recently competing and completing the Tough Guy Competition and visiting our link School in Uganda. At his country home he used to keeps pigs and has been known to mend a tractor! Jonathan's wife is Head of History & Politics at Cheltenham Ladies' College and they have two teenage children, one of whom went to Dean Close, and both of whom are currently at university.
