The Schola Cantorum
Dean Close Preparatory School provides the choristers for Tewkesbury Abbey. The boys are able to benefit from an excellent academic and all round education as well as a first rate musical training. A boy who is fortunate enough to become a member of 'The Tewkesbury Abbey Schola Cantorum' is given training and an experience which is without parallel. The experience and self discipline a chorister acquires stays with him for the rest of his life.
The choristers who were educated at The Abbey School, Tewkesbury until its closure in 2006, are widely acclaimed around the world for their live performances and their recordings. They have performed with numerous orchestras and have also appeared in concerts with Will Young and recently Aled Jones. Touring forms an important part of the Choir's life, and recent engagements have taken them to Moscow, USA, Germany, France, Italy, Sweden and Belgium. The Choir's recordings, on the Guild, Signum, Priory, Regent and Naxos labels, have been highly acclaimed and the choir regularly broadcasts on BBC Radio 3.
The choristers sing weekday evensong during term time in the splendour of Tewkesbury Abbey. The boys rehearse together at school five times a week and at the Abbey before they sing evensong. As a day and boarding school Dean Close is able to offer flexibility in offering day, day boarding or full boarding places. There are usually no weekend commitments and the boys are at home for church festivals such as Christmas and Easter. Diversity is at the heart of their work: recordings, concerts, broadcasts and international tours give breadth to their musical training and many of the boys win music awards to senior schools including Dean Close School. All this is achieved within the framework of a broad education in a school with excellent facilities, which aims to provide support for children of all abilities.
