At Dean Close Preparatory School we aim to provide our children with the opportunity to widen their horizons by exploring a wide range of clubs and activities outside of the academic curriculum. We are equipping our children to become well rounded adults who are able to take advantage of everything that life offers them.
There are a wide range of after school and lunch time clubs and activities available to all children from Years 3 - 8. Many are for pure fun. Others, like Dance and Speech and Drama involve specialist preperation for formal exams to give an additional focus for progress, achievement and satisfaction. Some clubs may vary from day to day and term to term but many are held regularly every term due to popular demand.

Clubs with an additional charge
Following on from her success at the Senior School with the Equestrian and Polo programme, we are delighted that Paula Watson has joined us on a Thursday afternoon to take some of our girls and boys to Summerhouse Riding School for lessons.
The Senior School has a very active golf club who play matches against other schools and have recently been on a golfing holiday. Several pupils are playing off below 10. In the Prep School we have a weekly golf club. Boys and girls get the oppotunity to go to Brickhampton golf club for a lesson at their practise range. Many of these pupils go on to be members of the Senior School golf team. There is a minimal extra charge for this club.
Lessons in Ballet, Modern and Tap Dance are available in our Dance Studio on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Pupils are prepared for the R.A.D. and ISTD Ballet examinations and the ISTD Tap and Modern examinations by the Janet Marshall Dance Studio. The dancers are able to perform to parents and friends every term during Dance Performance Platform and on stage at the schools Bacon Theatre at the end of the Lent and Trinity Term.
Speech and Drama
All children from Year 3 - 8 are offered individual Speech & Drama lessons and in the Prep School, half of all pupils currently take advantage of these lessons which serve to enhance individual learning and skill.
Speech and Drama lessons serve to focus attention on the individual, developing performance skills such as diction, expression, characterisation and performance and communication skills. Pupils taking these lessons also benefit hugely by participating in the annual Cheltenham Festival of Performing Arts and are entered for the LAMDA Verse and Prose Graded Examinations.
Pupils can choose to have lessons either individually, in a pair, or in a group of 3 – 5 pupils. Pupils receive 30 lessons over the course of the academic year and lessons are timetabled on a weekly rota basis.
Drama is often seen as a predominantly female preserve - but at Dean Close, there is nothing unusual in finding half the rugby team singing "Pick A Pocket" in their spare time. Of the nearly 150 Prep School pupils who opt for Speech & Drama in the Prep School, over a third are boys, and this ratio increases dramatically in the Senior School.
