We welcome a few pupils from overseas into our boarding community every academic year. Our excellent pastoral care means we are able to support these children in the appropriate boarding house dependant on their age and gender. Our aim is to make sure these children are given the inital support they need to settle in to english boarding school life and then extra support in the classroom and in the designated 'English as a Second Language department'.
English as a Second Language lessons
For those pupils who need extra help with the English Language, we offer English as an additional language with a specialist teacher in our EAL department. Children either have one-to-one or group lessons which cover vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation set in the context of listening, speaking, reading and writing. There is a strong emphasis on reading and exploring the classics of English Literature, appropriate for the EAL students. Students are prepared for the EAL Common Entrance exam.
Admissions Process
Parents or agents should contact Rhian Hayes in the Admissions Office at rhayes@deanclose.org.uk or on 00441242 258001. For pupils who are coming for one year we need school reports; pupils who are joining us for more than one year must pass our entry tests designed for non english speaking pupils. We can send our entry tests out to the pupils individual schools. The level of english language required is based on their year of entry.
Guardians
All children whose parents live abroad must have a Guardian who they can go to on exeat week-ends and half terms if neccesary. We encourage guardians to come to parent evenings, plays and sporting events as well to support their young charges.
Escorted Travel
Children travelling abroad can be escorted to and from all major airports at the beginning and end of term as well take a taxi sevice to other destinations. We use a local company whose drivers are all approved for working with children.
Fees
International pupils pay the same fees as other boarding parents, however they will be charged for 'English as a Second language lessons' in addition. They also need to pay a deposit of one terms fees.
