Design Technology at Dean Close stands with one foot in the Creative world and one in the Academic. Pupils are given the opportunity work through a variety of design briefs which allow them to explore and respond independently. It offers an opportunity to bring to life several different areas of the curriculum, linking principles taught in Science, Humanities and Maths to enable pupils to achieve high levels of outcome demonstrating an acute awareness of the aesthetic, of materials and of human needs against a backdrop of modern industrial processes.
The department, housed in the middle of School, offers the chance to work with modern and traditional materials and technologies in order for them to realise their design ideas. A wide range of facilities including a Graphics Suite, CAD/CAM facilities and multi-media workshop are available alongside close support from staff, enabling pupils to build on previous knowledge, honing their skills and enabling them to produce projects and products of very high quality.
All pupils coming to Dean Close will experience Design Technology (DT) in the Fourth Form which will enable them to make an informed decision about their creative options for GCSE and beyond. The course is a foundation in design principles, workshop practice and CAD/CAM. From the Remove year onwards they are able to study either Graphic Products or Resistant Materials leading to examinations at iGCSE and then Product d Design at AS/A2.
The facilities are also available to DT pupils during afternoon sessions during which they may pursue personal projects supported by academic staff and the departmental technician.
