Sports studies are stimulating examination qualifications that assist pupils in variety of ways. Career paths can include an extremely wide range of university sports courses or can simply assist in university entries for any other subject.
Dean Close offers PE as an academic subject at GCSE, AS and A2 level and we would welcome anyone who has a keen interest in sport and is good practically in a range of different activities, as well as wanting to learn the theory side.
The OCR PE GCSE is broken down in to four modules – two coursework components and two theory exams. In each of the two coursework sections, pupils are to be assessed practically in their ability to perform effectively in two different selected areas, as well as their ability to complete an analysis task. The written examination component consists of a one hour paper sat in the Trinity term of each of the two years. It covers a wide variety of topics including understanding the different factors that affect participation and performance, and understanding the health benefits and risks associated in taking part in physical activity.
At AS level, pupils are examined on two practical activities for performance, officiating and evaluating performance. The theoretical part of the course covers topics such as the skeletal and muscular system, motion and movement, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, acquiring movement skills, sports and culture and reasons affecting participation.
In the second year of A level studies, candidates focus on one sporting activity for their practical coursework and sit a two and a half hour written examination on exercise physiology, sports psychology and the history of sport.
