Scholarships

Music Scholarships

  • Music Scholarships are awarded at 13+ and at Sixth Form entry of up to 50% of the fees
  • Music Exhibitions are awarded at 13+ and at Sixth Form entry of up to 30% of the fees
  • The Peter Cairns Choral Scholarship is offered to a chorister from a Cathedral Choir School
  • A Sixth Form Organ Scholarship is available, enabling potential Oxbridge organ scholars invaluable opportunities for conducting and performance
  • Free music tuition is offered on selected instruments for all Music Scholars and Exhibitioners

13+ Entry

Candidates will be required to:

  • Perform two contrasting pieces on their first instrument
  • Perform one piece on their second and any subsequent instruments
    (The standard required at this level will generally be approximately Grade 5 + on the first instrument, although potential is always seriously taken into account)

Candidates will also be required to:

  • Perform at sight on their first instrument
  • Demonstrate aural ability through tests of pitch
  • There will be no written paper although the interview with the Director of Music will include general discussion that will assess the candidate's musical knowledge and interests.
  • 13+ Music Scholarships take place at the end of January/early February.
  • Commitment to the department's musical activities and wide range of groups is an essential undertaking for any music scholar or exhibitioner.

16+ Entry

Candidates will be required to:

  • Perform two contrasting pieces on their first instrument
  • Perform one piece on their second instrument
  • Perform one piece on any subsequent instrument if applicable
    (The standard required at this level will generally be approximately Grade 7 + for the first instrument offered)

Candidates will also be required to:

  • Perform at sight on their first and second instruments
  • Demonstrate their aural ability through some tests of pitch, rhythm and cadential recognition
  • There will be no formal written paper, unless the candidate is offering music as one of their academic options, but there will be an interview with the Director of Music which will involve an assessment of the candidate's general musical knowledge, interests and understanding.
  • When a written paper is sat, the format will be a choice of a number of different essay titles of which the candidate will be expected to answer two.

Sixth Form Music Scholarships take place in November.
