Hatherley House is the newest House at Dean Close, having opened in September 2011. It is currently home to 38 girls, from Fourth Form to Upper Sixth, who reside in a rather smart and spacious temporary building in the School Quad, affectionately known as ‘The Chalet’. This places it right at the heart of the School, which, being an active and nosey bunch, they love!
At the centre of the Hatherley House ethos is enthusiastic participation. Being such a small House, all the girls take part in a wide range of activities, allowing Hatherley to compete against the other Houses on a level playing field. This is great because it means that everyone gets a chance to take part in all sorts of contests, from bridge to badminton, singing to Sudoku, and chess to cross-country. Indeed, in its first term, the Hatherley Sixth Form were victorious in the annual inter-House Tug o’ War competition!
Another benefit of being a member of a smaller House is the strong sense of family identity that already exists between the girls and tutors. There is always someone about to chat to, over a cup of tea and a slice of toast, in the cosy purple Common Room. The House motto, ex ingeniis propriis familia floreat, (‘in the gifts of each, let the family flourish’) really embodies the Hatherley House spirit: as everyone contributes, enthuses and brings what they have to the table, the House grows in strength, character and prowess.
