BOYS BOARDING HOUSE

Housemaster:  Berian Williams-Jones

Tower House is located in the centre of the Senior School campus and forms a boundary to both the main and Chapel quadrangles. Its location ensures Tower is at the heart of the Dean Close community, and that the house significantly contributes to the special ethos of this unique School.d

The House motto is 'Ein' feste Burg', translated as 'a mighty fortress', and is the opening line to Martin Luther's famous hymn. It reflects not only the physical qualities of the house with its landmark tower, but also the Christian foundation of Dean Close, which are as relevant today as they have always been. Tower was refurbished to a very high standard in 2005 and beneath the traditional façade there is a brand new boarding house. It provides 'state of the art' accommodation for sixty or so full and day boarders in rooms ranging from small dormitories for the Fourth Form through to individual studies for the Sixth Form: all rooms provide en-suite facilities. The boys have access to an impressive main Common Room, with computer and recreation facilities, and flat screen television rooms for both the Sixth Form and those in the lower years.

The prime quality of Tower is the family atmosphere which is always evident, no more so than on the tradition Saturday night entertainment events, ranging from cinema outings and karting to barbeques and kwick cricket on the lawn. There is a tangible sense of house spirit once you enter the glass walled common room and boys soon appreciate the feeling of belonging that exists within Tower. There have been many and varied house successes of late, the most notable of which would be the House Singing, where Tower won the unison competition, and the Senior House Rugby. Victories were also recorded in the Senior Swimming, Shooting and CCF competition. The weekly assemblies serve to communicate routine notices and also to highlight and recognise the achievements of individuals or teams through the awarding of Gold Chits for endeavour, colours for sustained commitment or support of the house, and the weekly ‘House Hero’ for a worthy contribution to the community. The assembly will always include a short address, from both staff of scholars, and these will invariably of a Christian nature.

The Housemaster, Mr Berian Williams-Jones, lives at one end of the house and the Resident Tutor, Mr Peter Hicks, at the other. Mr Ben Price is the Assistant House master and Mrs Sheila Charania the Matron. Mr Peter Garner, Mr Greg Baber-Williams, Mr James Mears and Mr Dale Chapman are house tutors. The staff provide a continual adult presence throughout the day and night, in harness with the twenty four hour medical cover provided on-site, and ensure that the boys have a safe environment in which they can work, play and relax.
