Scholarships & Awards

The DT Department is pleased to offer the opportunity of Academic Scholarships to Scholars at 13+ and 16+ who show an amount of the following attributes:

  • A keen interest in the areas of Design and /or Modern Technology
  • An age appropriate working knowledge of designing, engineering and making of products or artefacts
  • An age appropriate working vocabulary of technical terms, understanding of tools, processes and materials
  • An understanding of Design in the wider world such as products or architecture
  • An interest in pursuing the subject outside of curriculum provision
  • Specialist focus in areas of design or manufacture of products or artefacts.

Applicants will be expected to

  • Provide folios including 3D projects as well as ICT based products such as leaflets, posters or websites.
  • Provide evidence of school based Design Technology.
  • Provide evidence of co-curricular activities possibly including personal projects
  • Provide an A3 sized Folio on the interview day - including paper based folio sheets and photographic evidence of activities to support their application. Note ‘E’ portfolios should be forwarded well in advance of the Interview - either in MS-Word or PDF formats to ddevans@deanclose.org.uk.
  • Sit a design examination, details of which are available from the HOD DT six weeks in advance of the examination in order to allow for appropriate preparation for the examination.
  • Be examined on their knowledge and understanding of appropriate communication techniques, materials, and processing knowledge as well as creativity.
  • Partake in an interview, which will include questions referring to the evidence provided and general, age specific knowledge and interests.

On receipt of a scholarship successful applicants will be expected to

  • Positively contribute to curriculum Lessons.
  • Regularly achieve good grades during curriculum lessons.
  • Achieve good grades in public examinations.
  • Commit to a proportional amount of co-curricular activities, including pursuing co-curricular personal projects.
  • Contribute positively to the department and act as an ambassador for the subject within school.
  • Help support departmental events such as taster days, visits and tours for appropriate guests.

Arkwright Scholarships

Each year the department will put forward Year 10 Scholars of appropriate capability to be entered for the Arkwright Scholarship. These prestigious and valuable Awards are made to Scholars studying Design Technology who are committed to studying Engineering or Maths based Courses at University.
