Bristol Exploratory

The physics department organised a trip to the Bristol exploratory for the Fourth Form where they investigated the hands on exhibits, took part in an interactive lecture on the ethics of genetic testing and experienced some stargazing within the planetarium.

Gloucestershire Space Exploration and Colonisation Competition

Five pupils took part in the Gloucestershire Space Exploration and Colonisation Competition, which involved 12 other schools. The project involved preparing a bid submission to build a small self sufficient research colony on Jupiter’s moon Europa in the year 2100. They looked at the technical and scientific problems of living on an ice world at -160oC, gravity 1/7th of Earths, where the journey back to Earth would be longer than a year.

Institute of Physics Schools Lecture

Sixth Formers attended the “Focus on Fusion” schools lecture by Dr Melanie Windridge, who explained how scientists working on nuclear fusion hope to replicate the behaviour of the Sun here on Earth to produce a plentiful and environmentally friendly energy source.
