Caldecote

Caldecote is the boys' boarding house for boys in Years 6 - 8, age 11-13 years. This beautiful four storey Georgian house is designed specifically for boys, with loads to do. There is a games room which has a pool table, table tennis, air hockey and table football. Alternatively the boys can play outside, whatever the time of year, as there is a large purpose-built floodlit covered play area; so on a winter’s night the boys are still able to go outside for a kick-about.

Even after 3 good meals a day they still seem to be hungry, so the most popular room in the house is inevitably the kitchen, here we all meet every evening to catch up and share toast, biscuits, cereal and as much fruit as they can eat. At bedtime the boys sleep in one of the 5 spacious dormitories, which they can personalise with their own posters, pictures and favourite duvet covers!

There are 2 resident Gappers and a matron who live in and are always on hand inside and out to play with the boys and welcome them whenever they come in.

Boarding life, by Hugh and edward bowden

Boarding here at Dean Close is a truly great experience. Everyone can find something they like to do with their friends because of the wide variety of activities and fun on offer for boarding pupils. After a day at school, I can come back and relax at the boarding house it’s just like home. Sometimes we have milkshake, toasty and cake nights provided by the matrons. I love boarding because of the generosity, not only of the matrons and gappers, but also my housemaster who provides us with all the things we need at all times.

The boarding community is a hub for socialising and fun, with regular trips to cinemas, bowling alleys, theme parks and many more. Being a boarder does not mean being confined to the boarding house, often we all go into town shopping or have a bite to eat. Once a week Year 8 boarders can also walk down to the nearby Tesco to spend £2.50 on tuck and on Wednesdays we can all have tuck from the cupboard downstairs.

Being a boarder has helped me make close friendships, improve my social skills and increase my confidence. When I first arrived here at Dean Close Prep School I was very timid and shy but now after two years, I am very grateful for how the place has changed my view and improved my interactions with fellow students.
