The Harper Library

The Library is the reading hub of the School. Situated in a central location between the Ferguson and Rickerby buildings and opening straight onto
the playground, it holds a bright and varied collection of stories for younger pupils; junior and teen fiction; fact and reference books; graphic novels; magazines; and stories on CD. Pupils can borrow books or, if they prefer, read in the Library at break or lunchtime. Our qualified and experienced librarian is on hand to advise on reading and research. Classes have the opportunity to visit for library lessons and they make use of topic boxes in the Library and in the classroom. The Library also provides a space for study and there are computers available to support this.

Beyond the Library

However, we don’t confine our books and reading to the Library. The Junior Forms' classrooms have large collections of stories that are colour-coded to enable our younger pupils to choose the level appropriate for them and to develop their reading skills. Throughout the school day, there are opportunities for quiet reading. Each class benefits from a circulating collection of new and innovative fiction which the Librarian presents to them each month.

The English classrooms display classics and new titles in a variety of genres so that our older pupils have the chance to explore books that, perhaps, they might not normally choose. Some of our Year 8 pupils work with the Head of English to compile 'Recommended Reads'. The boarding houses also
have stocks of books for cosy bedtime reading.

Reading Ambassadors

We have a team of Year 8 'Reading Ambassadors' who go into the day and boarding houses to promote reading. They are also on duty in the Library so that pupils can ask them for advice and recommendations.

World Book Day

We celebrate World Book Day with a week of activities such as discussion groups, quizzes and sessions where older and younger pupils ‘buddy-up’ and share reading. There are also frequent raids by the 'Book Police' who ‘arrest’ pupils and staff whose noses aren’t firmly in their books!
