Not to be upstaged by the National Champion Hockey Team, Dean Close School’s Golf team, consisting of Lee Cowan, Craig Graham and Mike Dawson, has got through to the ISGA (Independent Schools Golf Association) National Plate Final to be played at The Shire course in London on 27 June.
The team go through as Midlands plate winners after beating Monmouth by 18 Stapleford points in the Midlands final. All three Dean Close players beat their opposite number with the best victory going to Mike Dawson. In the Finals the boys will meet 17 other schools who won their own regional competitions.
The team had targeted the new Borders League as the competition they could win this season. Here, six teams along the Wales/England border play in their own league. After having to call one match off due to the poor weather this term, the boys have to win or draw their last match against the bottom team to win this competition. So far they have beaten Malvern, St Edward’s and Christ College and narrowly lost to Monmouth 3-2 to put themselves in the driving seat in this scratch competition.
Dean Close also took a mainly second team to play Bromsgrove 1st and won, showing the depth of talent in the current golf squad.
