Highlights of the Week:
- Final auditions for parts in this term’s school musical My Fair Lady took place this week and it is great to see some of our new pupils getting involved so early on.
- Chapel Choir saw a number of new pupils singing last night in our first Friday Chapel service of the term.
- A real privilege to have welcomed Nicholas McCarthy to speak to the Whole School on Wednesday afternoon. Inspirational!
- Christian Union BBQ on Wednesday evening saw a strong gathering sharing together in games and conversation.
- Rosanna Tatchell’s (Old Decanian) work “Highlights” is on display in the BonBernard Gallery from Friday 7 September to Friday 5 October 2018 and is well worth viewing!
Important Letters to Parents
The 4th Form and Remove are looking very smart in their new uniforms and we wanted to thank parents for accommodating this change in provision. We would however like to point out that the pleated skirts are not meant to be rolled up or tailored, as they are designed to be knee length skirts. The 6th Form are for the most part looking very business-like with the exception of a few skirts which are too short. We will continue to challenge this where necessary.
Parking on Shelburne Road
This is a polite request that Parents do not park on the Double Yellow lines along Shelburne Road. We receive numerous complaints and we can expect the Council and the Police to monitor this infringement of the Highway Code. Thank you for your cooperation in this regard.
Music lessons start on Monday 10 September and the timetables are on the board in the Music School. A summary of the first week’s music lesson times has also been sent to Housemasters to display in Houses. Please encourage your son/daughter to check the board regularly for their lesson times, as they will NOT be sent individual emails unless the published time changes. If they have any queries, they should see/email Mrs Porter or Mrs Klemz in the Music School.
Choral Society rehearses on Tuesdays at 7.00pm for an hour in the Music School; the first rehearsal is on 11th September. Staff and parents are very welcome to come and sing – an ability to read music is helpful, and we particularly need sopranos and tenors! We will be learning Karl Jenkins’ ‘The Armed Man’ for a performance in Tewkesbury Abbey on Friday 9 November.
Despite the best efforts of the Grounds Staff following the extended dry and hot spell over the summer, our pitches are currently not playable. We have tried to ensure that all boys within the rugby programme maintain access to good coaching and facilities, as well as maintaining the fixture list.
We have been able to secure the 3G synthetic pitch at Oxstalls Sports Centre at Plock Court in Gloucester (GL2 9DW). Until further notice, our home matches will take place there but with staggered start times. Catering will be on site at the Oxstalls Campus post fixtures and boys will either return on the bus to School or can be taken directly home by parents.
We will also be using the facility as a training venue and will be rotating the teams through the facility. This week we had the U14s training there, and next week the U15s and U16s will rotated through. We do have limited suitable training space at school, but at present we cannot quite accommodate everyone at the same time. Thank you for your understanding in this regard.

2nd XV – 3.30pm Kick Off

All of the map locations are available on the school Sports Website along-side the appropriate team along with Postcodes for Satellite Navigation.
We will keep you informed of any further changes to the published times and venues, which will also be updated on the school live calendar and the sports website when they are confirmed.
Accessing fixture details and team sheets
Schools Sports Website is the main platform that the school communicates with pupils and parents regarding fixtures and team selections, as well as all of the essential detail that is needed such as venue locations and return times. You can access this with the following hyperlink on our website http://www.deanclosesport.org.uk/ and once there you will be met with the screen below. Once you select the sport you are looking for it will give you the teams playing with venues and kick of times etc. to see team sheets you will need to click on the blue body icon and then you will be asked to provide a password, which is DCS2017.
Team coaches have been requested to publish their teams 48 hours in advance of the fixtures taking place. Whilst this is not always possible it is always our aim to do so for pupil and parental clarity.

Excitingly this term, we have our annual CU getaway from the 19 -21 October 2018 (the first weekend of the half-term holidays). We are going back to the Heatree Activity Centre in Dartmoor, leaving Dean Close at 2 pm on Friday the 19th and arriving back at approximately 5.00pm on Sunday 21st. It’s a great opportunity for the CU to get to know one another better, build relationships and friendships across and within year groups, to be encouraged by looking at the Bible together and to do lots of fun activities as a group. Our speaker, Mike Sohn, will be with us for the weekend and giving our talks in Luke.
We’ll also be cooking together, doing some outdoor activities, group games and there will time to relax as well. In our experience, these times away from home and School together can be real ‘Greenhouse times’ where everything from friendships to spiritual understanding can deepen in double-quick time.
We had a brilliant time on the CU getaway last year, here are quotes from a couple of students who came last year:
‘I wish it could be longer’
‘It’s good fun and good food’
‘I’ve got to know a lot of people more and got to know God more’
‘My favourite part has been getting to know everyone and making new friends’
If your son/ daughter would like to come, please email Lucy Ackroyd at email@example.com by 12noon on Saturday 15 September. The cost of the trip will be £110, but if this is a problem please do contact us, we wouldn’t want the cost to stop anyone from coming. Once we hear from you, we will contact you with more details and a detailed permissions form.
Parents’ Prayer Fellowship
All parents and guardians are warmly invited to the Dean Close Parents’ Prayer Fellowship group. The group meets roughly every fortnight during term time only on a Friday morning between 8.30 & 9.30am. A reduced set of minutes are sent out to those on the email list who cannot attend. Oh, and there’s coffee and tea too!
Please could all who’re interested email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
