It has been a busy fortnight back at Dean Close Prep with lots of events taking place. Firstly we hosted the Padfield trophy for Under 13A boys’ hockey. DCPS boys played exceptionally well achieving five wins out of five games including a 2-0 win in the final game against Millfield. Well done, everyone!
Secondly, the RAF pilot and contestant on the programme ‘Astronauts – Do you have what it takes?’, Kerry Bennett, came to talk to us about her career and how although she has made mistakes she has shown resilience and that was something we could all try and do. Kerry told us about how, on the show, she failed at one of the challenges but one of the judges, astronaut – Chris Hadfield, told her that he liked her positive attitude so decided to keep her – meaning she made it to the final. Sorry for the spoiler!
Year 7 had their first Healthy Living Day. The day started with an educational Life Skills session. Then everyone split into different groups and rotated between sessions throughout the day. Some made their way down to the brook where they had a lot of fun doing a teamwork session with Mr Beecham which included having to make a bridge with only three planks of wood without touching the floor and having to find Jenga blocks blindfolded with a team member offering directions. Another group went to the DCS Cookery School where they made some delicious flapjacks with apricots in. The other groups did a study skills session with our Head of Learning Support, Mrs Cahill and finally, there was a First Aid session, where pupils learnt to help someone who was choking. Overall, the day was very fun and very educational.
Finally, it was a pleasure to host the illusionist Richard Parsons this week, who showed the whole school some of his illusions and at the end of the day did a show for the parents. My favourite illusion was when he turned a ball into a lime and then into a lemon. I think that everyone was puzzled by Mr Parson’s illusions.
Thank you to Kerry Bennett and Richard Parsons for coming as guests for this week.
