During Michaelmas last year, the results from a pest monitoring programme confirmed that the textiles cupboard had a significant moth infestation.

This was of real concern as moths feed on keratin which is found in fur, wool, hair etc. As many of the old garments that we hold are uniforms that contain wool, the potential damage they can inflict is considerable.

It was for this reason that the Archivist spent Wednesday morning bagging up all the textiles into polythene bags which were sealed in situ to prevent the moths spreading to other areas. The items will then be put into a freezer for two weeks at -20.C to ensure they are pest free and the cupboard cleaned. What a glamorous job!
