The music scholars enjoyed a wonderful trip to Birmingham Symphony Hall in the Lent Term where they listened to the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra playwork by a variety of composers including Beethovan and Rachmaninov. The evening began withthe orchestraplaying afast and furious piece called the Russlan and Ludmilla Overture, after whichthe pianist wowed the audience with a longer piece by Beethoven, accompanied by the orchestra.
In the interval, over ice-creams,pupils hadthe chance totalk withone of the orchestra’s cellist, David Powell, whose childrenare Old Decanians.
The last piece was BIG! The huge orchestraastounded the audience withincredible fortissimos and pianissimos. At 55 minutes in length, Rachmaninov’s 2nd Symphony was exhausting to listen to, let alone play and atruly outstanding experience!
