On Friday 13th December, the Music Department hosted an annual Advent Convert like no other in the Bacon Theatre. Determined not to be thwarted by Covid restrictions, staff and pupils had earlier that week pre-filmed and recorded a number of ‘bubbled’ year group ensembles and soloists. The Music Department’s in-house tech whizz, Mr Rushton, then faced the daunting task of editing around 7 hours of footage into a single one hour concert, all against the clock in a 48-hour time period! The concert was a huge success – a capacity, socially distanced audience of parents and pupils enjoyed mulled wine and mince pies while listening to a varied programme of high-level piano, clarinet, oboe and acoustic guitar solos by Sixth Form Scholars. These were interspersed with festive repertoire performed by the Sixth Form String Ensemble, Fourth and Remove Brass Group, Lower and Upper Sixth Jazz Combos and some specially formed Christmas jazz trios and quartets. Here’s a sample, with Lily and Tom duetting on the Ratpack classic ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’. Congratulations to all 60+ students who worked so hard to prepare for the concert.
