INTRODUCING FORTFIELD’S HOUSEPARENTS
Alice and Jonathan Gould have been Fortfield Houseparents for five years and live at Fortfield with their two children. As well as being Houseparents, Jonathan is Head of History at the Prep School, Director of Studies and a Year 8 Form Tutor, he also coaches games. Alice teaches Religious Studies and is a Teaching Assistant for the Junior Forms.
Who are Alice and Jonathan?
Apart from being fantastic Houseparents, we thought you might like to learn about their likes and dislikes, loves and passions – we hope you enjoy getting to know them.
What do you love most about being a Houseparent?
Jonathan loves living in a house of energetic young people and sharing their highs and lows. Alice said “…the chance to make a difference to the girls at such a key time of their lives, it’s a privilege.”
What do you like to do in your spare time?
“Ride my bike, ride my bike and ride my bike!” We think Jonathan might like riding his bike.
Alice is pretty active too….triathlons, taekwondo, singing, being part of a church, playing board games and playing bananagrams with her friends.
If you could be an animal what would you be and why?
A flying squirrel. Jonathan didn’t say why! And Alice would like to be a cat, because they seem to do exactly as they wish and appear very content to do so.
What’s your favourite food?
Anything Thai and spicy and cake! Mmmm guess who likes what? You will have to ask them when you meet them.
What’s your favourite film?
Jonathan couldn’t decide. “It’s too hard to choose – I struggle coming up with a top 5, let alone a top 1!”
Whereas Alice managed to narrow it down to just three – Top Gun, Pretty Woman or The Princess Bride.
What’s your favourite time of day?
First thing in the morning, when everything is still and quiet. And mealtimes – tasty food and lovely people. Alice prefers the evenings.
Who would you most like to meet?
My daughter’s husband. (If she ever has one. She is only 12. I’m just curious!) And Jonathan would most like to meet Jesus.
Where would you most like to visit, that you haven’t already been?
They would both like to go to Australia and Jonathan would like to visit Vancouver and Everest, although not all in one trip.
Do you prefer Rugby or Football?
Jonathan kindly answered this question. “Daft question. Rugby!”
What activity would you most like to try, that you haven’t already?
Jonathan said Sky-diving. “I’m desperate to do it but promised I’d wait until our daughter’s 18th birthday when we’ll jump together!”
How long have you been a Houseparent and what do you enjoy most about it?
“5 years. I love the odd little moments when you get to spend time with just a few girls, maybe juicing or making something crafty.” Alice.
Do you have any special talents?
Jonathan used to be able to say the Greek alphabet in under 3 seconds, but hasn’t tried it recently …perhaps we should put him to the test!
What is your funniest memory from your time as a Houseparent at Dean Close?
“So many funny conversations with funny girls, like one morning one of them told me they had just dreamt their knees were sandcastles. They make me laugh every day.” (Alice)
