Dan and Kate Fraine are the Wilton Houseparents. Dan is the Head of Science at DCPS and has been at the school for seven years. Kate is was a primary school teacher, before becoming a Wilton Houseparent. Dan and Kate have two children; Daisy is eight years old and Toby is four years old.

Who are Dan and Kate?
We asked them to share some of their likes and dislikes, loves and passions. We hope you enjoy getting to know them.

What do you most enjoy about being a Houseparent?
Dan enjoys seeing the children become excited about things they love to do and watching them progress in lots of ways; socially, academically, musically and on the sports field.  Kate hopes she has created a warm,
welcoming home where the children feel secure, cared for and able to be themselves.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Kate loves art, dancing, going to the theatre and listening to or making music. She is in a samba band (with Dan) and a choir and likes to get involved in school concerts and plays. Dan likes playing almost any sport but also loves DIY. One day he wants to build the best tree house ever! The Fraines all love to go camping and spend all day outdoors, hiking, swimming or cycling.

If you could be an animal what would you be and why?
Dan would like to be a leopard. ‘I love their stealth and nimbleness, they get to live in cool places too.’ Kate has always fancied being a cat because they look so content and relaxed lying on a sunny windowsill.

What’s your favourite food?
For Dan, steak with chips, mushrooms, onion rings and a salad is hard to beat (a nice glass of red wine or a hoppy beer would help it taste even better!). Kate loves any seafood, especially if eaten within earshot of waves lapping on the shore and seagulls cawing! Both Kate and Dan are big foodies and Daisy and Toby are growing up to be the same!

What’s your favourite film?
For many years Kate’s favourite films were The Colour Purple (which ignited her love of Jazz music) and Westside Story. When she was at university, Kate discovered a passion for foreign languages, culture, music and food, so now finds it hard to choose a favourite. La vita è bella is a definite contender, though. For Dan, Austin Powers is a must see!

Have you have lived anywhere interesting?
Kate spent an amazing year living in Padova, Italy, as a student. Dan and Kate met working in a ski resort in Tignes, France and then moved to Barcelona. Barcelona is probably their favourite place because there is both sea and mountains within easy reach of a vibrant, artistic city. Kate would argue that Cheltenham is a very close second because she could not live without the jazz, literature, science and music festivals! As well as Tignes and Barcelona, Dan lived in the USA for three years as a child. Dan was born in Liverpool and is an LFC fan.

What’s your favourite time of day?
Kate’s favourite moment is when she snuggles down to read books with their children before bedtime and really looks forward to story-time with the Wilton children. Dan’s favourite time is lunch time; having something tasty to eat and a chance to have a chat with people.

Where would you most like to visit, that you haven’t already been?
Because she loves music and dancing, Kate has always wanted to visit Cuba. Currently, Kate and Dan are plotting a trip somewhere exciting for their 40th, possibly Asia or India, but can’t narrow it down any more than that because there are so many wonderful places to visit!
