Dale (Boys’ Day House)

Ben completed a degree in Geology at the University of Bristol in 2002 before moving to Cheltenham in 2005 to begin teaching at Dean Close School. His roles here have included resident tutor of Tower House, Master I/C Cricket, Geography teacher and most recently, Director of Studies for the Middle Years. He is a keen sportsman, playing a great deal of rugby and cricket until his mid 20s. More recently he has taken up running and cycling, regularly competing in endurance races, in particular duathlon. He has improved a huge amount during this time and regularly represents the Great British Elite Duathlon Team. In May 2019 he placed 4th in the European Championships in Denmark. Not a bad effort against professional and full-time athletes! He is also a two-time winner of the Cheltenham Half Marathon. You can follow his running and cycling exploits on Instagram @benpriceduathlon.

In Dale House, Ben emphasises the importance of hard work and growth mind-sets.

House motto: potentia scientia (Knowledge is Power)

Dale House is a very welcoming environment that encourages boys to be ambitious both inside and outside of the classroom. In recent years, the House has had a high number of successes in inter house events with wins in Junior and Senior House Quizzes, House Cross Country, House Swimming and House Music amongst others. Notable individual achievements include James Hunt currently representing England hockey at U18s along with Ellis Robson and Oli Smart at U16 level. George Barton played for England Rugby U16s last season and he along with a high number of other boys in Dale throughout the age groups are in the Gloucester Rugby Academy. Will Bunker won the Corpus Christi English Literature competition and earned a trip to Cambridge University last year and the school plays are often dominated by Dale boys.

It is obvious that not all boys will be able to represent their country at sport, play grade 8 music, lead a play or achieve academic excellence, but all members of Dale are encouraged to achieve their best and all achievements are celebrated on a weekly basis in House Assembly with someone being awarded Man of the Week. Moreover, being around hardworking, ambitious and interesting peers creates an atmosphere where boys of all ages and abilities become more driven to achieve their very best.

This house creates a culture of encouragement and celebration of others’ achievements. We don’t wait for opportunity, we create it and in the words of the House Master himself, we ‘work hard!’
