Dean Close Sixth Form girls, Judy Richards and Elsa Pool, became only the third couple in the 105 year history of the Midland Girls’ Schools’ Lawn Tennis Tournament ever to win the title three times – and they still have one more year left to break the record.

In the first pair tournament, Judy and Elsa won all of their group matches with ease. The pair played some outstanding tennis and quickly progressed to the semi-final against King Edward VI. A powerful display of tennis saw them win this match and advance to meet High School, Warwick in the final. The girls were victorious with a 6-1 win and Head of Tennis, Rhona Donaldson, said: “we have high hopes that they will repeat this outstanding performance next year to break the Midland Girls’ Schools’ Lawn Tennis record. Another win would see them become the only pair ever to win the title four times in 106 years.”

The annual tournament was held at King Edward VI High School in Edgbaston, a prestigious competition now in its 105th year. Judy and Elsa were joined by Charlotte Williams and Georgie Wilkinson who played in the second pair tournament. Charlotte and Georgie also played some great tennis and had some competitive games. Their tournament was a round robin format and they won all but one of their matches, losing narrowly to Tudor Hall to come runners up on the day. In the final they had the opportunity to turn the result around against Tudor Hall and did so with an emphatic 6-1 win, to secure a double for Dean Close tennis.

The four girls also had a tough match against Stroud High in the semi-final of the South West regionals last week and only narrowly missed out on another triumph. Rhona added: “Judy, Elsa, Charlotte and Georgie have done a fantastic job at putting Dean Close tennis up there with our other sporting successes and adding to the trophy cabinet with a shield almost as big as themselves. Congratulations girls – next stop, Wimbledon!”
