Following Theresa May’s call for a General Election, Dean Close was delighted to host three of the candidates hopeful of being next MP for Cheltenham. Conservative candidate Alex Chalk, Lib Dem candidate Martin Horwood and Green candidiate Adam Van Coevorden all came to the Flecker Library individually to face a live audience of Dean Close pupils and staff. Each candidate gave a speech, outlining their main campaigning issues and then opened up the floor to pupils who put the candidates through their paces with a gritty question and answer sessions, with some testing topics!
This was followed by the School’s own mock election with four Upper Sixth candidates representing the four parties. On Friday the 19 May, Jason Richards, Olivia Street, Ian Hayes and Luca Cappucini stood before their peers to deliver impassioned speeches to a packed Dining Hall, hoping to win their votes. They discussed their Party’s proposals for Brexit, the economy and their plans for Cheltenham. Luca won the election for the Conservatives with 45% of the vote, followed by Jason (Labour) 27%, Ian (Lib Dems) 15% and Olivia (Greens) 13%. We look forward to seeing how closely these results mirror those of the election later tonight!
