Two Dean Close pupils have placed in the top ten at the Target Sprint National Final for the second year running. Earlier this month Sixth Form pupils, Georgina Shepherd and Hugh Phillips, travelled to the Yate Outdoor Complex to compete in the finals of the new sport. Target Sprint consists of running 400m, stopping to shoot five targets at a distance of 10m from a standing position, repeating this and then finishing with a final 400m sprint.

This is the second year in a row that both of the pupils have competed in the National Final with last year being the first year that the competition had been held in the UK. The Dean Close team members both placed highly in 2016, Hugh in 3rd place and Georgina in 8th and nerves were creeping in due to the increased competition and unfamiliar course of this year’s race. Despite these worries, both pupils performed well; Georgina gained 10th place and Hugh finished in 8th, in a strong field containing four team GB members.

Sixth Former Hugh said, “Georgina and I greatly enjoyed the experience and would encourage everyone to take part in this new, friendly and inclusive sport, even in cold and periodically wet conditions!”
