This was a splendid evening in which scholars and their teachers celebrated the works of Homer and Virgil. Classical Civilisation students read in translation, selecting passages from the two poets’ works that they considered to be particularly significant. Pip Speed and Maya Huth read particularly well whilst George Bromage Henry’s passionate exposition of the role of Juno in book 10 of the Aeneid will be remembered for a long time. Eliot Tottman introduced us to the Iliad and the wrath of Achilles whilst Stephen Whitford spoke eloquently on Virgil’s poetic achievement. Mr Evans and Mr Allen read passages in the original Greek and Latin respectively.
