In school circles, a familiar quote, arguably attributed to WB Yeats, is that ‘education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire’. The challenge of the classroom is to spark pupils’ interest and curiosity, rather than simply bestowing necessary knowledge and skills. This week’s Junior Play has been a wonderful example of pupil engagement, through the medium of drama and verse. Our younger children have grappled, with much humour and poignancy, with a full range of Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets. Thanks must again go to our fabulous Music and Drama teams. I have no doubt that for many pupils, on and off the stage, this experience has sparked and, hopefully, burst into flame an interest in this enriching literature which will last ‘for ever and a day’.
