As the pupils, parents and staff of Dean Close received their GCSE results this morning there has been a great deal to celebrate. 34% of the exams taken by the 95 Fifth Form pupils this summer have been awarded A* grades. 19% of the pupils finish their courses with 9 A*s or better and 98% of the year group gained 5 A* – C or better. With 53% of the grades being A*/A and more than 70% of the pupils scoring at least one A*, the School is understandably thrilled for those pupils who two years ago would have expected to reach this standard, and the significant number who have surprised themselves with what they have achieved.
In the midst of the statistics are stories of hard work, the odd disappointment and determination on the part of pupils, their parents and the teachers. Dean Close is a school which places great emphasis not only on the academic life but on the contribution that the co-curricular side brings too. It is wonderful to see elite level sportsmen and women, musicians, actors and artists succeeding both inside and outside the classroom. A number of Dean Close pupils are having their cake and eating it.
Headmaster Bradley Salisbury said: “This year, the Classics department has led the way with 100% of grades at A*/A but with some very strong results across all of the faculties it is easy to see why, following the improvement in the A Level results and very promising AS results, the pupils and staff at Dean Close are looking forward to the years ahead.”
