This morning, five Dean Close linguists joined over 3000 students across the European Union participating in the annual Juvenes Translatores competition, organised by the EU Commission’s Directorate-Generale for Translation to find and reward the best young translators in the European Union. Dean Close was one of just 73 schools in the UK selected to take part, and our five participants were chosen after a hotly-contested internal heat. Our five competitors (Beth Ellison, Lauren Ferro, Susie Hicks Beach, Toby Pallister and Caitlin Mahoney) had two hours, starting at precisely 10am Brussels time, to translate a challenging text from Spanish or French into natural-sounding English. With the help of a paper dictionary, our students worked tirelessly and stretched themselves beyond their normal diet of A level texts.
