Dean Close has won the Royal Navy Knockout Competition for the second year running. Not only did they secure a team win at HMS President in London last Saturday, but Jon Pritchett also won his pool to earn the individual Epee Trophy.
Although the boys got off to a slightly shaky start, they improved tremendously through the day. There was praise all round as the A team, consisting of Jon Pritchett (Epee), Henry Hick (Sabre) and Jake Bainbridge (Foil), claimed themselves 31 points, narrowly beating their opponent, HMS Excellence, by 1 point. The boys were split into two weapon groups, A & B, but unlike previous years, the teams were fencing to 15 points in the pools instead of 5, making the competition much tougher. Fencing Coach, Kevin Nelson, comments: “The standard at the competition was good, but the boys were excellent in competing so well against 13 teams.
