Celebrating Chinese New Year at DCPS
Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is the most important holiday in the Chinese calendar. It marks the beginning of a new year based on the lunar calendar and is a time for family reunions, festive meals and cultural traditions. Each year is associated with one of the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac, and 2025 is the Year of the Snake – a symbol of wisdom, intuition, and transformation.
At DCPS, we have been embracing the spirit of this special festival with a series of exciting celebrations.
A Special Assembly to Kick Off the Festivities
Last week, during Headmaster’s Assembly, Annie and Angel gave us a fascinating insight into Chinese New Year traditions – from the symbolic clothing people wear to the delicious foods they enjoy and the importance of spending time with family. We also discovered which Chinese zodiac animal represents each year group at DCPS!
A highlight of the assembly was a stunning dance performance by Emma in front of the entire school. She and the other girls showed incredible bravery and talent, making it a memorable moment for everyone.
Chinese New Year Party
Yesterday, we continued the celebrations with a Chinese New Year Party during break time. All Chinese pupils were invited to the EAL classroom, where they enjoyed a special selection of treats, including delicious pancakes prepared by our catering team. There were also fortune cookies and some pupils got creative by making Chinese lanterns.
A huge thank-you goes to Mr Jones, Head of DT, who kindly used the 3D printer to create mini snake figurines for all the pupils at the party - such a fantastic keepsake to mark the Year of the Snake!
A Taste of Chinese New Year
Today, our celebrations continue with a special Chinese lunch, giving everyone the chance to enjoy traditional flavours from this wonderful festival.
It is lovely to see our pupils coming together to celebrate this meaningful occasion.
We wish everyone a Happy New Year!
