Dean Close Foundation Riders Shine at National Championships at Hickstead
The Dean Close Foundation Equestrian Team—featuring talented riders from Dean Close Senior and Dean Close Preparatory School—once again did themselves and their schools proud with a remarkable performance at the National Championships held at Hickstead. Over several challenging days of competition, the team delivered outstanding results, securing two team top-eight finishes and two individual top-eight placings for the County Cup Showjumping and Dressage, and National Arena Eventing Championships.
In the prestigious Open County Cup Dressage Team event, riders Corinna, Maddie, Rose, and Fenella earned an impressive 5th place nationally, representing Gloucestershire with pride among teams from across the UK.
In the 80-85cm Arena Eventing team competition, Joe, Fenella, Rose, and Maddie achieved a brilliant 7th place finish out of 36
qualified teams. With over 200 riders in this class, this result stands as a testament to their determination and teamwork.
Year 9 rider Rose turned heads with a stellar double-clear round in the Open 1m Arena Eventing National Finals, securing 4th place out of 71 riders — a phenomenal achievement at this elite level.
Maddie continued to demonstrate her versatility and talent by finishing 4th individually for Gloucestershire in the Open Novice Dressage and also 4th in the Open Elementary Class, showcasing her skill across multiple disciplines.
From Dean Close Preparatory School, Year 6 pupil Chenxi delivered a superb performance in her 90cm National Qualifier, earning a 3rd place individually with a double-clear round. She then went on to compete in the 90-95cm County Cup Show Jumping Finals, once again flying clear and displaying remarkable strength and composure.
The team of Joe, Lucinda, Aoife, and Fenella showed resilience and grit on the final day, despite some tired horses and long days of competition. Their hard work paid off as they secured team qualifications in both 70cm and 80cm Jumping with Style for the National Championships in October. Individually, Fenella and Joe also qualified in the 70-75cm class.
While a few poles rolled the wrong way for the Dean Close Foundation riders costing them some podium spots, the camaraderie,
resilience, and sportsmanship displayed by the DCF squad were second to none. The riders supported each other through highs and lows, celebrating victories and offering encouragement in tougher moments with maturity well beyond their years.
“This squad really embodied what ‘team’ means,” said their coach. “I couldn't be prouder of how the DCF squad worked hard together at all times.”
With equestrian sport growing rapidly across UK schools, this year’s Championships were the largest yet—highlighting the rising popularity and high level of talent in school equestrian teams. Dean Close Foundation is clearly helping lead the way.
Congratulations to all riders for a superb set of performances, we're excited to follow along on your journey ahead.
