Dean Close School recently welcomed budding geographers from across Gloucestershire for the local branch heat of the Geographical Association’s (GA) WorldWise Quiz. Twenty teams of Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils from seven comprehensive, grammar, and independent schools gathered to compete for a coveted spot in the next round, set to take place against either the Bristol or Worcester branches in early 2025.
The atmosphere was lively as pupils arrived in the main hall and tackled an engaging warm-up challenge: 25 geographical anagrams to unscramble into countries, regions, processes, or features. This brain-teaser set the tone for the evening, with Denmark Road High School’s Frank Atlantic team scoring an impressive 22/25 to take the lead.
Dr Alan Marvell, Senior Lecturer in Events Management at the University of
Gloucestershire, acted as Quiz Master, bringing expertise and enthusiasm to the role. Across eight rounds, including topics such as volcanoes, country outlines, geography of sport, and the Global South, pupils were tested on their geographical knowledge while gaining valuable insights through Dr Marvell’s detailed answer explanations.
After a closely contested competition, The Geocloggs from Pate’s Grammar School emerged victorious, securing the winning shield with a total score of 67 points, nine points ahead of their nearest rivals. Two teams from Denmark Road High School, Frank Atlantic and JNJ, claimed second and third place respectively, separated by just one point. All three teams now progress to the regional heat.
Participants were rewarded with sustainable wooden medals, badges, certificates, and chocolate bars, adding a unique and eco-friendly touch to the event. Special thanks go to Peter and Lisa Gurr of Laser Creative Ltd for crafting the bespoke awards.
Sarah Rath, Head of Geography at Dean Close School, and her team received glowing praise for hosting the event, with participants commending the warm welcome and excellent refreshments.
Feedback from schools highlighted the evening’s success:
- “My boys were buzzing afterwards and enjoyed the healthy competition.” (Marling School)
- “It was a great event – we’d love to do it again next year.” (King’s School, Gloucester)
Dean Close School extends its congratulations to all participants and wishes the advancing teams the best of luck in the regional heat. #DeanCloseContribution #DeanCloseFlourish
