Douglas Graham Humanities Centre Opens at the Heart of Dean Close

Pupils and staff have begun the new academic year by taking full advantage of the outstanding new Douglas Graham Humanities Centre, which officially opened at the start of the Michaelmas Term.

Positioned at the heart of the campus, the Centre is named after the well-loved Headmaster Douglas Graham, who served the School from 1953 to1968, and represents a significant milestone in Dean Close's vision to create a modern Academic Quad.

Designed to complement the existing Mathematics, Business and Economics Centre which was opened in 2021, the Centre provides an exceptional environment for the study of subjects including History, Geography, Politics, Religious Studies and related disciplines. The purpose-built facility features eight spacious classrooms alongside a dedicated breakout space, offering flexible areas where pupils can discuss ideas, work collaboratively and engage in deeper academic exploration.

Since opening its doors, the Centre has quickly become a vibrant hub of activity. Bright, contemporary teaching spaces and carefully considered design features support a range of learning approaches, from seminar-style discussion and debate to independent research and group collaboration.

The opening of the Humanities Centre forms a key part of Dean Close's wider commitment to investing in facilities that enhance the educational experience of every pupil. More than simply a new building, it reflects the School's belief that the most effective learning takes place when ideas are shared, challenged and connected across disciplines.

The development also marks an important step towards the creation of a fully integrated 21st Century Academic Quad. Alongside the new Humanities Centre, work continues on the School's ambitious new Science Centre, which will further strengthen opportunities for interdisciplinary learning. Together, these facilities will create an academic heart where pupils can move seamlessly between the humanities, sciences, mathematics, technology, the Library and the Futures Hub.

Head of Dean Close, Ali Harber, said:

“The Douglas Graham Humanities Centre stands as a significant investment in the future of Dean Close and is already enriching the everyday experience of pupils and staff. As lessons continue throughout the term, the centre is helping to create an environment where academic ambition, intellectual curiosity and collaborative learning can flourish for generations to come.”
