Eddie the Eagle Inspires Pupils with a Message of Determination

We were delighted to welcome Michael Edwards, better known as 'Eddie the Eagle', to Dean Close for an inspiring talk that encouraged pupils to recognise the power of determination, resilience and self-belief.
Eddie shared the remarkable story of his journey from a young boy who first discovered a love of skiing on a school trip to becoming the first person to represent Great Britain in Olympic ski jumping. Along the way, he faced numerous challenges and setbacks. Without financial support for his training, Eddie balanced his sporting ambitions with work as a plasterer and even spent time sleeping in a disused Finnish hospital in order to save enough money to pursue his Olympic dream.
Pupils were captivated by Eddie's honest and funny account of the obstacles he encountered and the perseverance required to overcome them. His story demonstrated that success is not always achieved through natural talent alone, but through hard work, determination and an unwavering belief in one's goals.
Eddie's message encouraged pupils not to be discouraged by the doubts or opinions of others, but instead to have confidence in themselves and pursue their ambitions with courage and conviction. His experiences provided a powerful reminder that resilience and a positive mindset can help overcome even the greatest challenges.
We extend our sincere thanks to Eddie for delivering such a thought-provoking and inspirational talk. His story left a lasting impression on our pupils and will undoubtedly encourage many to approach their own goals with renewed confidence and determination.
