Modern Foreign Languages Pupils Earn High Commendations in National Translation Competition

We are delighted to celebrate the success of our Modern Foreign Languages pupils in the 2026 Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators, organised by The Queen's College, Oxford.

With more than 25,000 pupils taking part in this year's competition, the standard of entries was exceptionally high. The judges commented on the outstanding quality of submissions and noted just how difficult it was to select the winners and those receiving commendations.

We are especially proud that three Dean Close pupils were awarded High Commendations for their exceptional translations. Justus and Freddie were recognised for their French translations, while Nadia received a High Commendation for her Spanish translation. This is a fantastic achievement in such a competitive national event.

The Anthea Bell Prize challenges pupils to translate demanding texts with both accuracy and flair. Success requires not only an excellent understanding of the source language but also the ability to capture meaning, tone, and cultural nuance through thoughtful and sophisticated use of language.

Congratulations to Justus, Freddie, and Nadia on this well deserved recognition. Their achievements are a wonderful reflection of their dedication, linguistic talent, and the strength of Modern Foreign Languages at Dean Close.
