Money Wise Workshop: Year 5 Pupils Explore Financial Literacy

Earlier this term, our Year 5 pupils took part in an engaging and insightful Money Wise Workshop, where they explored key financial concepts and gained a deeper understanding of their relationship with money. The workshop, generously sponsored by Attivo, encouraged pupils to think critically about earning, spending and managing money wisely.

During the session, pupils delved into important financial topics, learning about where money comes from, including earning, saving and spending. They also explored different payment methods, from cash and debit cards to contactless and mobile payments, and discussed the difference between needs and wants to better understand essential spending versus luxury purchases. One of the most eye-opening aspects of the workshop was discovering the real value of money, how prices vary, and uncovering the hidden costs of ownership.

Many pupils were surprised by what they learnt! While they were familiar with modern payment methods, such as using a phone, a smartwatch, or shopping online, they were shocked to discover the fundamental difference between a debit card and a credit card. This highlighted how digital transactions are shaping young people's financial understanding. One pupil was amazed to learn that a luxury watch could cost more than a house, while another came to realise the ongoing expenses of owning an exotic pet—including food, insurance, and veterinary care.

Here’s what some of our pupils had to say about their experience:

“It was a lot of fun learning about the value of money.”

“It made me more aware of money and how to spend and use it wisely.”

“I never realised that a watch could be more expensive than a house!”

“I enjoyed the interactive quiz at the end where we got to move around!”

Thanks to this workshop, our pupils now have a stronger foundation in financial literacy, equipping them with the skills to make informed financial decisions in the future. A huge thank you to Your Guardian for delivering this workshop as part of their Make Sense of Pence programme, helping to inspire the next generation of financially responsible individuals.
