Sixth Form pupil, Isaac, Appointed Organ Scholar at St Davids Cathedral

We are delighted to announce that Isaac Hanfrey has been awarded the distinguished position of Organ Scholar at St Davids Cathedral, Pembrokeshire, beginning in September 2026. This appointment represents an extraordinary recognition of Isaac’s exceptional musical talent, dedication, and years of commitment to his craft.
Isaac first joined Dean Close 8 years ago and has since flourished under the expert guidance of Mr Bell, his organ teacher. His musicianship has been shaped by countless hours of dedicated practice. Reflecting on his achievement, Isaac said:
“I am delighted to have been offered the post of Organ Scholar at St Davids Cathedral in Pembrokeshire, starting in September 2026. This is a tremendously exciting opportunity for me to develop as an organist in such a beautiful and historic setting. I look forward to accompanying services for a large congregation and working with their renowned choir. I am extremely grateful to Mr Bell, my organ teacher, who has supported me since I joined Dean Close as a chorister in Year 5. I am also deeply appreciative of the opportunities the Dean Close Music Department has given me, as it has really allowed me to flourish.”
St Davids Cathedral is steeped in musical tradition, with references to choristers dating back as far as 1132. The Cathedral Choir
sings up to six services each week, has produced acclaimed recordings, and features regularly on BBC Radio and Television. Its organ scholars enjoy fantastic opportunities to perform with professional orchestras and participate in international tours across Europe, Australia, and the USA. Alumni include some of Britain’s most celebrated musicians, such as the Tudor composer Thomas Tomkins, the renowned Renaissance composer who began his musical journey there as a chorister.
That Isaac now joins this distinguished legacy is a remarkable achievement — one that not only reflects his own talent and determination but also shines as an inspiration to the whole Dean Close community. We are immensely proud of him and look forward to watching him flourish in this exciting new chapter of his musical journey.
