Highlights of the Week

  • The Spring Concert on Sunday 9 February was a wonderful evening of high calibre musicianship, and wonderful choral expression. It truly was a Community event.
  • L6 attended the ‘What if….. Driving Awareness Presentation’ which we hope highlighted the huge responsibility everyone has as a road user.
  • The U16 boys’ National Hockey campaign came to an end on Thursday with a 2-0 defeat to Bromsgrove, but the U18s proved too strong for Canford on Tuesday winning 9-1.
  • Our newly-formed, pupil led International Committee organised a memorable Lunar New Year Celebration Music Night which was enjoyed by all.
  • The Leiths U6th pupils completed their practical exams this week and the food looked and tasted sensational.

Careers Opportunity

Interested in Medicine or Healthcare?

Gloucestershire’s Healthcare Science Week offers a range of exciting opportunities to peer behind the scenes of many healthcare and medical specialisms. Occurring throughout the week of Monday 9 – Saturday 14 March at either Gloucester Royal or Cheltenham General Hospitals, these short events are right on our doorstep.

These would be unaccompanied by staff, but we would be happy to help pupils arrange transport / travel to and from the event and support them seeking permission to miss lessons, but pupils would need to book promptly as places are going fast (we would recommend booking even if you were only partly sure, as you should be able to give suitable notice to cancel).

Discuss with your parents, and book using this link. You will then need to seek permission from Ms Donaldson & Mr Hall. Let Mr Suckle know what you have signed up for, so that he can assist with this.

Land For Tree Planting

The Dean Close School environment team are currently exploring ways for to reduce our carbon footprint. In addition to other initiatives surround re-use and recycle, we are very interested in developing a tree planting programme. This would be used to offset our transport for general use and particularly for overseas trips.

The idea is that if a group is going on an overseas trip, they would calculate the carbon generated by the air travel plant some trees to offset this. The attraction being that pupils would be directly involved and aware of their responsibilities. The problem is that there is no obvious area at Dean Close to commit to a tree planting programme. We would love to hear from anyone in our community who lives locally and who has a piece of land that might be fit for this purpose. If you would be willing to explore this further with the team, please contact the Headmaster’s PA, Jane Bond, at jebond@deanclose.org.uk.

Exeat Weekend – 7th & 8th March

To support our overseas boarders who find it difficult to manage the logistics of exeat weekends, there is an option to remain under the care of the school for the forthcoming exeat weekend. The itinerary is as follows:

Friday night – Normal prep and overnight accommodation in school.

Saturday morning – Brunch and then travel to Bristol.

Saturday afternoon – Check into hotel and visit the city.

Saturday evening – Dinner and Cinema followed by overnight accommodation in a city centre hotel, wth staff supervision.

Sunday – Return to Dean Close for lunch and an afternoon of study in the library or time to relax in one of the house common rooms.

The cost of the weekend will be £100 and any parents/guardians who would like to take up this offer must confirm with Mrs Karen Evans, in the Front Office, by 12pm on Wednesday 26th February.
