General notices

Mobile Phone Policy (all day parents)

As you are aware, the Parents’ Handbook highlights the aim to make DCPS a mobile ‘phone free zone for day pupils (Boarders have their own guidelines).

However, there are some exceptional circumstances when it is necessary for a child to bring a mobile into school. On these occasions the mobile ‘phone must be handed in immediately the child arrives in school to the Houseparents for safe keeping during normal school hours, the phone must never be taken into the changing rooms, be used to take photographs on the school grounds, or used to access any apps whilst on the school grounds and should only be used to contact parents.

Recently, it has been noted that several children are bringing mobile phones into school and we therefore feel it necessary to remind you of the procedure regarding the granting of this special permission.

Pupils are only allowed mobile ‘phones in school if they have had permission from the Deputy Head (Logistics and Compliance), Mr Jonathan Harris. If you have not done so already, then please contact him in writing requesting consent, if you consider it imperative that your son or daughter has a mobile ‘phone in school. Permission is required for any time children want to bring their phones into school e.g. an occasional use or a one off occasion.

It should be noted that children can, with permission, use a House landline during the School day. In accordance with our School Policy there will be periodic checks to make sure that mobiles are not being kept in School bags or pockets.

Thank you for your understanding and co-operation in this matter.

Information on Swimming Gala, Friday 24th January (all parents)

Friday, 24th January is the start of the Exeat Weekend for Dean Close Prep School. It is also our annual House Swimming Gala. Please note the following:

  • After feedback from staff, pupils and parents we are trialling a new format for the swimming gala.
  • This year we are splitting our Junior and Senior Swimming Galas, to involve more pupils and, hopefully, improve the experience for competitors and spectators.
  • Junior House Swimming Gala: Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 11.30am-1.00pm. After the gala pupils will go to lunch and then have a lesson 2.15-3.15pm and be available for pick up from 3.30pm.
  • Senior House Swimming Gala: Year 6, Year 7 and Year 8 2.00-3.30pm.
  • All pupils will be ready to be picked up from 3.35pm
  • Selection for the House Swimming Gala is based on performances in swim training or PE lessons.
  • All pupils should have their swimming kit in school in case other pupils are absent.
  • All pupils swimming should be wearing their house polo shirt on the poolside.
  • Please could all parents at the Swimming Gala note that there is no filming or photography allowed in the swimming pool, due to Child Protection requirements.
  • At the end of the Gala, pupils in Year 6, Year 7 and Year 8 may be signed out from the swimming pool. If you would like to use this option, then please email the house so that they are aware.
  • All other pupils will be taken back to DCPS and can be signed out from houses from 4.00pm.

On Exeat weekends we ask that all pupils be picked up by 5.00pm.

  • There are no after school activities on Exeat Fridays.
  • All day pupils should take all their games kit, footwear and swimming bags home.

To help with parking we would also like to suggest the following options:

  1. Please try alternative parking places found on Shelburne Road, Hatherley Court Road (please be considerate to residents by not blocking driveways) or by the Sports Hall.
  2. On Friday, if collecting from DCS straight after the House Swimming Gala there is parking available on the tennis courts by the Bacon Theatre and by the astro turf pitches.

Parents’ Tennis (all parents)

We extend our facilities and our expertise to all parents! Dean Close Services run weekly group Tennis lessons as an opportunity for parents to meet, socialise, improve their tennis skills, get fit and have fun.

We would like to promote the availability in the Beginner’s Group, which runs weekly in term time on Mondays, from 8.00-10.00am with Tom Harris. If you haven’t picked up a racket before and would like to give Tennis a try or are a little rusty and want to ease back into your game, then why not come along to the sessions! First session of the Lent Term starts on Monday 13th January.

Don’t forget we also run Cardio Tennis each Wednesday in term time, from 9.00-9.45am, which you can just come along to each week. Cardio starts back on Wednesday 8th January and is taken by either Jason Poole or Tom Harris.

All sessions take place on the Shelburne courts near the School Sports Hall.

If you would like further details or would like to book onto the sessions, please contact Lydia Day on: enquiries@deanclosevenues.co.uk or call 01242 267431.
