Highlights of the Week

  • The Advent Concert last Friday enabled us to welcome an audience into the Bacon Theatre for the first time since March. It proved to be a wonderful celebration of music.
  • Sunday night’s live stream of the Take 6 & London Adventist Chorale from London.
  • The 4th Form thoroughly enjoyed the Live Stream of the Charles Dickens classic Christmas Carol’, from the Old Vic in London. There is something to be said for eliminating a 6 hour plus round trip to see a live London performance.
  • The socially distanced Year Group Christmas Carols and Dinners on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night.
  • Seeing Lucky’s entry to the CEP Photography competition. Two of his photos are featured below.

We wish you, one and all, a happy and healthy Christmas!

Thank you for all your support this term.

Remembering Angus

Oak Remove Girls

The Oak Remove girls are getting closer to their destination in their challenge of running the distance from Dean Close to Deer Park in Pembrokeshire, in memory of their classmate Angus Caton who sadly passed away in June this year. They wanted to do something in memory of Angus at this particularly poignant time of the year and decided to emulate the walk undertaken by Angus’s dad in the summer. To support their efforts and to find out more about their challenge, please go to their JustGiving page. Final push to complete before Christmas!

The Headmaster has kindly agreed for me to make a special plea to the Dean Close Community to support Blue Skye Thinking (a children’s cancer charity set up in memory of my son). All we are asking for is your Vote to help us win The Oxford Bus Company ‘brand the bus’ competition which will help us raise valuable awareness and funds for children with brain tumours.

No money, no donations, just 60 seconds of your time to make a Christmas wish come true.

Please follow the link below and scroll down to No. 21 to vote for Blue Skye Thinking.

We would be delighted if you are able to share this as widely as you can.

Very many thanks, Andrew Hall (Deputy Headmaster)

12 – 23 JANUARY

For the first two weeks of the Lent Term, the Fifth Form will be on study leave to sit GCSE trials in the Old Gym.  During this period, Day pupils only need to be in school for the trials, while Boarders are expected to work in Houses.  In addition, all pupils in teams are expected to meet games commitments, and any extra-curricular lessons need to be arranged around the trials.  Timetables have been given out to pupils and are now available on Pupil and Parent Apps.  If your son or daughter is going to be absent from any of the trials, please contact his/her Houseparent.  Fifth Form pupils are back in normal lessons on Monday, 25th January.  Please contact Dr Bradley at mbradley@deanclose.org.uk if you have any questions.

Dean Close Adventure

A little end of term note to say thank you to everyone who has been involved in this first term of Adventure@DeanClose. We’ve had some great times on bikes, in kayaks, hanging off ropes and falling off slacklines …. and there’s plenty more to come.

Pupils, staff, departments, houses: if you want to join the adventures then email me – I’m always open to ideas:

And don’t forget to follow the adventures. Right now we’ve got an ‘Advent…ure Calendar’ going with an awesome new pic everyday in December on Insta and a few videos on twitter:

Easter Revision Course 2021

Following a year of unprecedented times surrounding Covid-19, our popular Easter Revision Course at Dean Close will be running again in 2021.

It was announced in England yesterday, that public Examinations are set to go ahead for both A Level and GCSE.

When the country went into a National Lockdown back in March 2020, all school sites were shut down and we moved to home-schooling and learning became virtual. Learning at a distance would have been experienced in a variety of ways for students but whatever their story, students need to be equipped and ready to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding.

We will be here to support your son/daughter in their studies with our Easter Revision Course, which is taking place on the 12th – 16th April 2021. The course is open for A Level and GCSE students and as always, residential and non-residential places are available. We have given the course a slight refresh this year and in addition, will be offering overseas students an online delivery of the course. For further details, please email Lydia Day on: enquiries@deanclosevenues.co.uk or visit the website: www.deanclose.org.uk/courses and download the 2021 course brochure.
