Christmas Jumper Day

Friday 11 December

Our Christmas Jumper Day has come round again! Next Friday we would encourage all pupils and staff to wear a Christmas Jumper in aid of Save the Children. Pupils are to wear their normal School Uniform with a Jumper of their choice. Please don’t go out and buy a new jumper! If you don’t have a Christmas Jumper then please wear a jumper of your own. We are not wanting pupils to buy a new Christmas Jumper.

Remembering Angus

Oak Remove Girls

The Oak Remove girls have taken up the challenge of running the distance from Dean Close to Deer Park in Pembrokeshire, in memory of their classmate Angus Caton who sadly passed away in June this year. They wanted to do something in memory of Angus at this particularly poignant time of the year, and decided to emulate the walk undertaken by Angus’s dad in the summer. To support their efforts and to find out more about their challenge, please go to their JustGiving page.

On Sunday 13 December from 7.00 – 8.30pm in the Bacon Theatre, the Music Department will be screening a live concert given by the American acapella group Take 6 and the London Adventist Chorale. Singers from our choirs will be attending and we would also like to invite any other interested pupils (to be socially distanced in the Bacon Theatre and, if necessary, the PMH). Please RSVP via the form below.

This promises to be a fun and accessible night of gospel and acapella soul with a Christmas flavour. Take 6, heralded by Quincy Jones as the “baddest vocal cats on the planet,” is the quintessential a cappela group and model for vocal genius. Six virtuosic voices united in crystal clear harmony, against a backdrop of syncopated rhythms, innovative arrangements, and funky grooves that bubble into an intoxicating brew of gospel, jazz, R&B, and pop.

Find out more about the concert and the Adventist Chorale here: https://voces8.foundation/take6-londonadventist-13-dec-20

And listen to a clip of Take 6 here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tB7D9Hxwc20

Since seating is limited due to social-distancing, please reply by Monday 7 December to allow us to arrange the seating plan.

If you would like to sign up please reply using THIS FORM!

12 to 23 JANUARY

For the first two weeks of the Lent Term, the Fifth Form will be on study leave to sit GCSE trials in the Old Gym.  During this period, Day pupils only need to be in school for the trials, while Boarders are expected to work in Houses.  In addition, all pupils in teams are expected to meet games commitments, and any extra-curricular lessons need to be arranged around the trials.  Timetables have been given out to pupils and are now available on Pupil and Parent Apps.  If your son or daughter is going to be absent from any of the trials, please contact his/her Houseparent.  Fifth Form pupils are back in normal lessons on Monday 25 January.  Please contact Dr Bradley at mbradley@deanclose.org.uk if you have any questions.

Cheltenham YMCA

Christmas Hamper Appeal

Cheltenham YMCA houses up to seventy homeless people at a time and works with them on their way to independence. As Christmas is approaching, it can often be a difficult time for their clients and we like to do something that can raise their spirits. Our Upper Sixth team of volunteers would like to offer them our support by producing hampers for each of their clients, consisting of items such as food, shower gels/soaps and other little things like that, which have been donated by the Dean Close community.  Christmas can be a lonely time for some of them and a small gesture like this could make all the difference.

Donation boxes will be available in each of the houses and the Front Office for any items on the attached list.

Could we please ask for all donations to be bought in by Wednesday 9 December so the hampers can be made up and distributed before the end of term.

Please contact office@deanclose.org.uk if you have any queries.

Easter Revision Course 2021

Following a year of unprecedented times surrounding Covid-19, our popular Easter Revision Course at Dean Close will be running again in 2021.

It was announced in England yesterday, that public Examinations are set to go ahead for both A Level and GCSE.

When the country went into a National Lockdown back in March 2020, all school sites were shut down and we moved to home-schooling and learning became virtual. Learning at a distance would have been experienced in a variety of ways for students but whatever their story, students need to be equipped and ready to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding.

We will be here to support your son/daughter in their studies with our Easter Revision Course, which is taking place on the 12th – 16th April 2021. The course is open for A Level and GCSE students and as always, residential and non-residential places are available. We have given the course a slight refresh this year and in addition, will be offering overseas students an online delivery of the course. For further details, please email Lydia Day on: enquiries@deanclosevenues.co.uk or visit the website: www.deanclose.org.uk/courses and download the 2021 course brochure.
