Highlights of the Week

  • Fewer pupils asking directions around the site, which means they are settling into a rhythm.
  • Watching sports fixtures taking place.
  • Seeing the Upper 6th Geographers heading off on their residential Field Trip making school life feel semi-normal.

Covid Testing

This is a reminder that we are fully expecting all pupils to continue testing twice weekly until the end of September as per Government guidance. Day pupils will be issued with testing kits to take home, whilst testing for Boarders will take place centrally in house twice a week.

Please watch this instructional video for details on how to test effectively:

COVID Vaccinations

The UK Government has announced that all 12 to 15 year olds will be offered one dose of a COVID vaccination in the coming weeks, as part of a programme that will be operated through schools. Dean Close has yet to receive any details of this. Once we have been informed of the process, we will inform all relevant parents and pupils, including how to give or withhold consent. Pupils aged 16 – 18 are also eligible for vaccine which can be organised through their GP or via a walk-in clinic.

Face Coverings

We are maintaining our current procedures but will continue to monitor our guidance to pupils.

“The government has removed the requirement to wear face coverings in law but expects and recommends that they are worn in enclosed and crowded spaces where you may come into contact with people you don’t normally meet. This includes public transport and dedicated transport to school or college.”

A Service for Angus Caton

A short service to recognise the life of Angus Caton will take place in the Dean Close School Chapel on Wednesday 22 September at 4.50pm. Angus died at the age of 14 on 28th June 2020 after a 7 year battle with multiple brain tumours. Until now – due to the pandemic – we have not been able to formally recognise this wonderful young man’s life as a school community.

The service is open to any pupils, staff and parents who wish to attend. The dress code will be school dress for pupils and staff (and smart for parents).

Whilst this occasion will be tinged with great sadness, the Caton family would like to honour Angus’ bubbly and happy personality by keeping the service as light and positive as possible.

After the service, we will be formally ‘opening’ Angus’ Bench outside Dale House. All are welcome to join us there. Parking will be on the Railway Courts next to the Day House Village.

Field Day

Tuesday 28 September

Field Day takes place on Tuesday 28 September, and provides us with an opportunity for our pupils to expand their horizons a little bit and do something slightly different. Please see below, the plan for the day. Full details will follow in next week’s mailing.

Upper 6th pupils wanting to attend University Open Days need to complete the request from that is available in the Library or online on our Futures Page. Forms must be signed and approved at least 24 hours in advance of the Open Day.

Fourth Form (Year 9) and New Joiners’ Parents’ Meetings with Tutors

Thursday 23 September 5-7 pm (BST)

Friday 24 September 1.15-2.15 pm (BST)

The Parents’ Meetings for parents and guardians of pupils who are new to the School (i.e. all Fourth Form and pupils who started in the Senior School this term) are on Thursday 23 September, 5-7 pm, and Friday 24 September, 1.15-2.15 pm.  The Thursday meeting is the main meeting for UK based parents and overseas parents in a similar time zone. The Friday meeting is reserved solely for overseas parents/guardians in time zones GMT+4 or more, to allow for the meetings to take place at a reasonable hour.  Both meetings will be conducted via video calls using Parents Evening System https://deanclose.schoolcloud.co.uk  and the instructions for booking and making video appointments are attached here.

Each parent/guardian can book up to one 10-minute appointment with the child’s tutor and can then invite one more person (parent, guardian or pupil) to join the appointments, so a meeting can be conducted from two separate devices (smartphone or laptop).  The booking for appointments opens at 8 am on Wednesday 15 September, and closes at 8 am on Thursday 23 September.

If you have any problems logging in or making appointments, please contact Mr Mbore Adichareh at isams@deanclose.org.uk

Music Lessons

Individual music lessons started this week and it was really heartwarming to hear such a variety of music again in the department after the silence of the summer.  It would be very helpful if parents could remind their children to check the music lesson timetable board regularly. Saturday or first thing on Monday morning works well – to make sure that they know when their music lessons are, so that lessons are not missed un-necessarily.  4th formers and other musicians new to the school are especially urged to find and check the noticeboard.

Please do contact Dom Franks (dafranks@deanclose.org.uk) or Sylvia Klemz (shklemz@deanclose.org.uk) if you have any questions about music lessons.

Choral Society

We extend a warm invitation to parents, friends and family members to come along to join the Dean Close Choral Society which meets on a Tuesday evening in the Helen Porter Hall. Please see attached for further detail.

Foundation Prayer Fellowship

Parents who have children at any of our schools across the foundation meet fortnightly to catch up, support one another and to pray for the needs of Dean Close and our children. Aware that as a parent body we are very much an international bunch, we are pursuing a blended approach with local parents coming to Dean Close House for a cup of tea or coffee in person, and those who are farther flung logging on through Zoom. Any and all DC parents are invited – there is no pass mark or test to join! Please do contact deancloseppf@tentastic.com for more information.

Bus Service

Please see the attached document for more information about the amended Cheltenham Independent Schools Bus Service provided by Pulham & Sons. If you have any further queries please contact jo.smith@deanclose.org.uk in our Estates Office.

It is very important to note that Dean Close School is a NUT and Sesame Free School. Our catering staff stick fastidiously to very strict guidelines, which can be compromised when pupils bring nut products onto the school site. If you have any queries in this regard please do not hesitate to contact the Health Centre on health@deanclose.org.uk.

Leave of Absence Requests

Any request for Leave of Absence during term time needs to be submitted to the Deputy Headmaster (ashall@deanclose.org.uk) via the Housemaster, well in advance. Leave is only granted in exceptional circumstances as any absence from lessons, places additional pressure on the pupils to catch up on work that they have missed.
