Letter from the Headmaster

A Service of Thanksgiving for Angus Caton

Wednesday 22 September

A short service to recognise the life of Angus Caton took place in the Dean Close School Chapel on Wednesday at 4.50pm. Angus died at the age of 14 on 28th June 2020 after a 7 year battle with multiple brain tumours. Due to the pandemic, this is the first time that we have been able to formally recognise this wonderful young man’s life as a school community.

It was a privilege to welcome the Caton family together with family and friends to give thanks for his life and officially ‘open’ Angus’ Bench outside Dale House.

Do take a moment to read these touching words delivered by Angus’ dad, Alistair.

COVID Vaccinations

The UK Government has announced that all 12 to 15 year olds will be offered one dose of a COVID vaccination in the coming weeks, as part of a programme that will be operated through schools. Dean Close has yet to receive any official details of this. Once we have been informed of the process, we will inform all relevant parents and pupils, including how to give or withhold consent. Pupils aged 16 – 18 are also eligible for vaccine which can be organised through their GP or via a walk-in clinic.

Flu Vaccines

The Gloucestershire Immunisation Team will be offering flu vaccines to all DCS pupils in Year 11 and below, on Thursday 7 and Friday 8 October. These will be done by nasal spray and will not require a needle.

We request that all parents with children in these year groups return the completed form to us even if they do not wish their child to have the vaccine. If you do not consent to the vaccine you can also confirm this via email.

Please see attached for an information letter from the Immunisation Team and for the Consent Form.

Important: The nurses are not able to accept photographs of the consent forms; only scans and print copies will be accepted. The form must be signed by someone with legal parental authority for the child.

Completed forms should be sent as soon as possible to vaccines@deanclose.org.uk, or by Monday 27th September at the latest.

8 October 2021

On Friday 8 October we will be holding our annual showcase for musical pupils who have recently joined the school. The event will take place at 6pm in the Helen Porter Hall in the Music Department, and we anticipate finishing by around 7pm.

The evening is a relaxed and informal occasion where new students may perform a short piece on any instrument or voice and meet like-minded peers. All students in the 4th Form and new Lower 6th joiners are invited to perform – they can do this via their music teacher, or by emailing the Music Administrator, Mrs Klemz at shklemz@deanclose.org.uk

Parents and guardians are also warmly welcome. Refreshments will be served upon arrival and music staff will be on hand to answer any questions. We will contact parents of those performing to invite you to attend around a week before the event.

We look forward to meeting you at the showcase and, in the meantime, please do encourage your musical children to get involved!

Disguised Decanian

On November the 20th, Dean Close will be holding its very own charity event in the Bacon theatre to raise funds for The Brain Tumour Charity and Blue Skye Thinking. Following the two tragic losses the Dean Close Community has experienced in the last year due to brain tumours, as a school we wanted to help fund vital research into both adult and child brain tumours through these two charities.

The Disguised Decanian is a singing event where 16 disguised performers will sing in a head-to-head, knock out style performance where ultimately 1 performer will be revealed as THE Disguised Decanian. Tickets will be available soon through the Bacon theatre website, so save the date!!

It is very important to note that Dean Close School is a NUT and Sesame Free School. Our catering staff stick fastidiously to very strict guidelines, which can be compromised when pupils bring nut products onto the school site. If you have any queries in this regard please do not hesitate to contact the Health Centre on health@deanclose.org.uk.

Leave of Absence Requests

Any request for Leave of Absence during term time needs to be submitted to the Deputy Headmaster (ashall@deanclose.org.uk) via the Housemaster, well in advance. Leave is only granted in exceptional circumstances as any absence from lessons, places additional pressure on the pupils to catch up on work that they have missed.
