Highlights of the Week
- Bake Sale for Nyakatukura link school in Uganda.
- Hearing the sound of the Houses rehearsing for tomorrow’s House Singing Competition. See below for further information.
- U16 Girls’ Netball team qualifying for the Regional Finals.
- Feedback received about how well our pupils conducted themselves on Field Day as they helped out within the Community. See below for a small snapshot. The CCF Competition was incredibly tight with just 3 points separating 3rd place from the winners.
The latest guidance from the DfE is that all pupils and staff should keep testing twice weekly.
“Testing remains important in reducing the risk of transmission of infection within schools. That is why, whilst some measures are relaxed, others will remain, and if necessary, in response to the latest epidemiological data, we all need to be prepared to step measures up or down in future depending on local circumstances.
Staff and secondary school pupils should continue to test twice weekly at home, with lateral flow device (LFD) test kits, 3 to 4 days apart. Testing remains voluntary but is strongly encouraged.” Gov.uk – 27 Sept 2021
WE ASK THAT ALL PUPILS TEST ON SATURDAY 2 OCTOBER AHEAD OF THE HOUSE SINGING COMPETITION.
House Singing Competition
Saturday 2 October, 7.00-9.00pm
On Saturday 2 October, as per the Calendar, we are holding the annual House Singing Competition in the Bacon Theatre starting at 7.00pm. Due the fact that it is a whole school event, there is unfortunately no space for any additional spectators in the Theatre but, we are delighted that for the very first time, we will be streaming the event LIVE so that parents are able to watch and enjoy the evening with us by using this LINK:
The theme for this year’s unison songs is ‘New Beginnings’. We are expecting the programme to finish at around 9.00pm, and day parents are able to collect their sons and daughters thereafter.
Please Note: The Railway Courts Parking area alongside the Day House Village will be Open for the pick-up after the Competition.
Supper has been ordered in the Dining Hall for those Day pupils who have indicated that they will be in school.
Sunday 14 November
This Service represents a very important part of our calendar as we remember those who lost their lives during conflicts. We require all pupils to attend Chapel on this poignant occasion, by reporting to their Houses at 10.30am for registration.
Sadly, we are unable to accommodate parents in the Chapel for the Service due to this being a whole school event.
10.30 Registration in House
10.45 Seated in Chapel
10.50 Service of Remembrance Starts
12.00 Collection time for Day Pupils
Further details will be published closer to the event.
FUTURES EVENT: VIRTUAL CAREERS WEEK
4th-8th October 2021, 7-8PM
School Notices is hosting a virtual careers week for Sixth Form pupils and parents next week. There are 8 interactive webinar sessions to choose from, focusing on an excellent range of popular careers, as well as a 9th session, Friday’s INTERVIEWING / PRESENTING WITH AN IMPACT, which be an excellent bit of preparation for any upcoming university / apprenticeship / job interviews.
N.B. Early sign-up is recommended to avoid disappointment. While the Zoom invite may state 6:30PM, all events start at 7PM.
FLOCK: Sustainability Awareness
‘Flock’ is a stunning whole school art installation raising awareness for sustainability at Dean Close. Created from recycled paper from the site, this flock of 600+ origami pigeons (as per the DCS school shield) will take flight in the BonBernard Gallery from 18th October to 13 November 2021 (term time only). Each bird is made by a member of our community and carries a personal pledge to make a change towards living a more sustainable life. As the individual birds come together to create a flock, we understand how our single actions can make a difference to the wider picture.

THE MADNESS OF GEORGE III
by Alan Bennett
We are delighted to announce that we have obtained the performing rights for the Main School Play this term, which will be the award-winning four-times Oscar-nominated and 16 BAFTA winner, THE MADNESS OF GEORGE III which will be staged in the Bacon Theatre on Friday 3 and Saturday 4 December. Do save the date for your diaries.
The play is a tragi-comedy about the famous Mad King George III as he descends into the lunacy which was to plague most of his last 30 years as king of England in the 1780s.
On November the 20th, Dean Close will be holding its very own charity event in the Bacon theatre to raise funds for The Brain Tumour Charity and Blue Skye Thinking. Following the two tragic losses the Dean Close Community has experienced in the last year due to brain tumours, as a school we wanted to help fund vital research into both adult and child brain tumours through these two charities.
The Disguised Decanian is a singing event where 16 disguised performers will sing in a head-to-head, knock out style performance where ultimately 1 performer will be revealed as THE Disguised Decanian. Tickets will be available soon through the Bacon theatre website, so save the date!!
Parents are asked to remind their sons and daughters that, when they are crossing Shelburne Road and the Lansdown Road in particular, they should cross at the pedestrian crossings. Thank you for your assistance with this!
Leave of Absence Requests
Any request for Leave of Absence during term time needs to be submitted to the Deputy Headmaster (firstname.lastname@example.org) via the Housemaster, well in advance. Leave is only granted in exceptional circumstances as any absence from lessons, places additional pressure on the pupils to catch up on work that they have missed.
