Asymptomatic Testing

Following our conversations with Public Health England / Health Security Agency this week, we would like parents to maintain daily Lateral Flow Device testing until the end of next week.

“Testing remains important in reducing the risk of transmission of infection within schools. That is why, whilst some measures are relaxed, others will remain, and if necessary, in response to the latest epidemiological data, we all need to be prepared to step measures up or down in future depending on local circumstances. Testing remains voluntary but is strongly encouraged.”

CLASSICAL Association

Monday 11 October

If you have not been able to get away over the summer and have missed the warmth of the sun, may we take the opportunity to invite you to the Classical Association’s first lecture of the academic year which might transport you, intellectually at least, to the sun-drenched Greek Peloponnese and the Sanctuary of Zeus at Olympia?

Judith Barringer who is the Professor of Greek Art and Archaeology at Edinburgh University will be discussing the monumental temple of Zeus and the sculpture that adorned it. She is a world authority on this most significant of sites and will, no doubt, elucidate the powerful messages that the sculptural programme of the temple generated and communicated to aspiring participants and visitors to the ancient Olympic Games.

Upper Sixth (Year 13) Parents’ Meetings

Thursday 21 October, 5.00-7.00 pm

Friday 22 October, 12.30-1.30pm

The Parents’ Meetings for parents and guardians of Upper Sixth pupils are on Thursday 21 and Friday 22 October.  The Thursday meeting is the main meeting for UK-based parents and overseas parents in a similar time zone. The Friday meeting is reserved solely for overseas parents/guardians in time zones GMT+4 or more to allow for the meetings to take place at a reasonable hour.  All meetings are conducted via video calls using Parents Evening System  https://deanclose.schoolcloud.co.uk and the instructions for booking and making video appointments are attached here.

Each parent / guardian can book up to ten 5-minute appointments with the child’s subject teachers and tutor and can then invite one more person (another parent, guardian or pupil) to join the appointment, so a meeting can be conducted from two separate devices (smartphone or laptop).  The booking for appointments opens at 8 am on Wednesday 13 October, and closes at 8 am on Wednesday 20 October.

If you have any problems logging in or making appointments, please email isams@deanclose.org.uk

Dean Close Music

Performance at Chapel Arts, 15 October, 1.00pm

On Friday 15 October, some of our most accomplished Music Scholars will be giving a short lunchtime recital from 1.00 – 1.40pm at Chapel Arts in Cheltenham (https://www.thechapelarts.com/).

Pupils will be performing an eclectic selection of chamber music by Brahms, Frank Bridge, Chopin, Bach and more, coached and led by members of the Carducci Quartet.

Entry is free of charge, although a retiring collection will be taken to raise funds for the Brain Tumour Charity.

If you are free at that time, we would be delighted if you would join us to support our young musicians.

FLOCK: Sustainability Awareness

‘Flock’ is a stunning whole school art installation raising awareness for sustainability at Dean Close. Created from recycled paper from the site, this flock of 600+ origami pigeons (as per the DCS school shield) will take flight in the BonBernard Gallery from 18th October to 13 November 2021 (term time only). Each bird is made by a member of our community and carries a personal pledge to make a change towards living a more sustainable life. As the individual birds come together to create a flock, we understand how our single actions can make a difference to the wider picture.

Leave of Absence Requests

Any request for Leave of Absence during term time needs to be submitted to the Deputy Headmaster (ashall@deanclose.org.uk) via the Housemaster, well in advance. Leave is only granted in exceptional circumstances as any absence from lessons, places additional pressure on the pupils to catch up on work that they have missed.
