It gives us great pleasure to welcome back those of you who are existing parents and guardians, and indeed those of you who are joining Dean Close for the first time.

This Weekly Mailing provides the Portal which will give you information about forthcoming events, trips and excursions, reminders about dress code, policies, and a host of other exciting news. I trust that you will find this helpful.

We try to limit the amount of email traffic to parents for obvious reasons, but this Weekly Mailing is a valuable source of information so do please endeavour to read through it.

This weekend has seen the arrival of our new Overseas Boarders, and they appear to have settled quickly into their new surroundings.

The Estates team have worked hard on a large number of projects over the summer and we are very grateful to them for their commitment and dedication.

I trust that your sons and daughters will have a happy and constructive year!

Day House Village

Open House Breakfast – Friday 6 September at 7.45am

Day Pupil Parents are invited to come along to have a cup of tea or coffee and some light bites on Friday morning 6 September from 7.45 to 8.30am, which will give you a chance to get a feel for the New Day Houses and chat to your son or daughter’s Housemaster or Housemistress. Parking for this particular event will be on the Railway Courts alongside the Day House Village, which are accessed from Estates Drive and are situated behind the Music School.

It is very important to note that Dean Close School is a NUT and Sesame Free School. Our catering staff stick fastidiously to very strict guidelines, which can be compromised when pupils bring nut and sesame products onto the school site. If you have any queries in this regards please do not hesitate to contact the Front Office on

Leave of Absence Requests

Any request for Leave of Absence during term time needs to be submitted to the Deputy Headmaster ( via the Housemaster, well in advance. Leave is only granted in exceptional circumstances as any absence from lessons, places additional pressure on the pupils to catch up on work that they have missed.

Sports Sessions – Tuesday 3 September

All the Fifth and Sixth Form pupils have Sport on Tuesday afternoon as part of the Curriculum, so it is important that they bring the appropriate kit into School on the very first day of term.

Road Safety

Parents are asked to remind their sons and daughters that, when they are crossing Shelburne Road and Lansdown Road in particular, they should always cross at the pedestrian crossing.

Pupils Driving Into School – 6th Form Only

In order for us to ensure the safety of all our pupils, it is essential that we obtain certain details. If your son or daughter currently drives to School, or intends to drive to School in the near future, we would be grateful if you could carefully read the attached letter and then complete and return the proforma provided at your earliest convenience to the Front Office. We really appreciate your assistance in this regard.

Dean Close Choral Society

The Society is recruiting adult singers now!  The Choral Society is open to everyone – parents past, present and future; staff, past and present; governors; Old Decanians – indeed, anyone connected or unconnected with the Schools.  There are no auditions, although being able to sing and read music is highly desirable, as well as availability to rehearse on Tuesdays for an hour from 7.00pm.

There will be eight rehearsals to learn Puccini’s Messa di Gloria starting on Tuesday 5th November and continuing until 26th November and then, after a pause for Christmas, they will resume on 14th January for the remaining four rehearsals.  Our concert is in the Pittville Pump Room on Sunday 9th February, when Choral Society will take part in the Spring Concert.  Rehearsals are in the Music Department’s Prince Michael Hall.

Please come to along on 5th November if you would like to sing.  We are in particular need of sopranos and tenors, but all singers will be most welcome.  If you are intending to come along, please do let Sylvia Klemz – – know so that there are enough copies available.
