It has been a busy and exciting week and it is good to see how quickly our new pupils have fitted into the new routines. The new Lower 6th enjoyed an Induction Programme which included an away day of team building and group work, which culminated in group presentations to Senior Members of staff. To see how mature and engaged they were gives us great optimism for this new cohort of senior pupils at the top end of the School.

Dean Close welcomed ‘real life superhero’ Jamie McDonald on Wednesday to address the entire school and he delivered an entertaining and thought provoking talk which left the pupils inspired by his bravery and fortitude. You can catch up with snippets of his visit on Twitter.

At this early stage of the year it is great to be able to celebrate so many successes. Do keep an eye on the News Feed on the website for recent highlights and we are looking forward to our first sports fixtures of the term which start this weekend.

GCSE – New Grading System

As I am sure you are aware the new 9-1 GCSE Grading System is now upon us. We study a number of iGCSE subjects, along with GCSE subjects, and therefore will have a mixed currency of results for the foreseeable future. Miss Donaldson, Director of Studies for the GCSE years, has already spoken to the Fifth Form about these changes and will be speaking to the Remove and Fourth Form this week, so your sons and daughters should be able to explain things further.

On the school website, you will be able to find a list of the exam boards which we are using for each of the GCSE and iGCSE subjects and whether they are to be graded using letters or numbers ( To reflect these changes all grade cards and reports that you receive will now have either a letter or number to signify the current attainment levels, depending on the subject. On the website you will also find a grade comparison chart which shows how the 9-1 grades compare to A*-G.

We will also be changing the way effort levels are reported on grade cards and reports for all years, using the more descriptive terms of Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Needs to Improve, and Cause for Concern. Please do not hesitate to contact Miss Donaldson at, if you have any questions.

There will be a meeting for all those pupils who have either signed up for Dance, or indeed are still interested in signing up for Dance, at 1.30pm on Monday 11 September in The Orangery. We look forward to seeing you!

6th Form Girls’ Uniform – Information for Parents

Thank you to all of you who have done your best to ensure your daughter complies with the 6th Form uniform regulations at Dean Close. We have been impressed by how smart many of them look and their business-like demeanour. However there is a sizable minority of girls who are not following the uniform guidelines as requested.

Mrs Davis will be carrying out a uniform check on all 6th Form girls immediately after Chapel on Monday. If the clothes worn do not adhere to the guidance issued, the 6th former will be given 48 hours to rectify the situation before being referred to the Headmaster. Any 6th Form girls who are not in Chapel on Monday, are asked to see Mrs Davis at lunchtime.

Thank you for your co-operation in this matter and helping to maintain the standards of dress among our pupils.

Parents’ Hockey

An invitation is extended to all parents who might be interested in playing hockey. The Parents’ Hockey Club meet every Saturday on the Senior School Astro at 8.00am. Please click here for further information.
