Highlights of the Week

  • The Production of Amadeus on Friday and Saturday was spellbinding, with stunning performances from the leads, who were superbly supported by the courtiers, chorus, and the lighting and sound technicians. A resounding triumph!
  • 5th and 6th Form Classicists visited the British Museum on Wednesday for its blockbuster Troy, Myth and Reality exhibition.
  • A number of pupils and staff enjoyed the opportunity to buy a few early Christmas presents at the Shelburne House Charity Fair.
  • This week has seen the U16 and U18 girls win a place at the National Indoor Hockey Finals, as have the U18 Boys.
  • The 1st XV Rugby team beat Langley Park 19-0 to progress to the National Plate Semi-Final, and the U15s played well against Marlborough but lost narrowly in their Cup match.
  • Three of our pupils were lucky enough to attend the NATO conversations in Westminster on Tuesday.
  • The 6th Form English pupils enjoyed an evening of readings, conversation and a quiz relating to the set text The Great Gatsby on Thursday evening.
  • Today we have been raising awareness and collecting essentials for Cheltenham Open Door though our annual Christmas Jumper and Mufti Day.

Our catering staff stick fastidiously to very strict guidelines, which can be compromised when pupils bring nut and sesame products onto the school site. Advent Concert

A Night at the Movies

Friday 6 December, 7.00pm, Bacon Theatre

Come along and enjoy an evening of musical numbers from many of your favourite films – ET, Schindler’s List, Despicable Me, Skyfall and lots more.  Orchestra, Close Harmony, Concert Band, Sinfonia, Ripieno Strings, Jazz Band and Brass Group will all feature during the evening, along with five different soloists – nearly 90 musicians in all!

Mince pies, mulled wine, tea and coffee will be served in the Dining Hall during the interval and the concert will finish at approximately 9.00pm.

There is no charge for entry but there will be a retiring collection in aid of the Brain Tumour Charity.

Service of Nine Lessons & Carols

Wednesday 11 December

We are delighted to invite Dean Close Parents, Family and Friends to join us for our service of Nine Lessons and Carols at 7.30pm on Wednesday 11 December. The Service has a wonderfully festive feel, with the Chapel Choir leading the singing in a candlelit Chapel, and will be followed by mulled wine and mince pies in the Dining Hall. The Service will be finished by 9.00pm.


Carol Service & Whole School Christmas Dinner

Thursday 12 December

The Whole School Carol Service is starting at 5.30pm and, is followed immediately afterwards, by the Whole School Christmas Dinner, a Disco for the Lower School, and Social for the Senior School.

Smart party dresses are to be worn, but they must not be too short or low cut please. Shoulders need to be covered by a jacket, shawl, or similar during the Carol Service in Chapel. Boys are to wear smart dress, or suit, with black shoes. Seniors may wear black tie. Junior girls please bring flat shoes for the Disco as high heels will not be allowed in disco area.

Reading Challenge

We have launched an extended Reading Challenge for our Fourth Form pupils – Read Around the World & Beyond! The challenge promotes how important we consider reading to be for our pupils’ success and wellbeing. Our pupils should be reading widely and we want to recognise them for doing so with high profile awards and rewards. The challenge is open-ended and the Christmas holiday is a great place to start. Sports Hall Drive

Shut on Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 December for House Cross Country

Next Monday and Tuesday (9th and 10th December) sees the return of House Cross Country and our boys and girls will be challenging themselves to win points for their houses around Big Field and the brook. To facilitate the event and to ensure the safety of our pupils the Sports Hall Drive will be closed at the following times:

Monday 9.00am – 12.00pm approx.

Tuesday 9.00am – 3.00pm approx.

Easter Revision Course 2020

Our ERC 2020 dates are: Wednesday 15 April – Sunday 19 April (with residential students arriving on the evening of Tuesday 14th April).

This year the course dates will enable our Dean Close Boarders to attend and stay an extra night, at no extra charge, ready for the start of the new school term starting on Tuesday 21 April.

Places are available on a residential or non-residential basis and as always, we are offering this course to A Level and GCSE students.
