Highlights of the Week
- Boarders’ Trip to Kaspa’s Ice Cream Parlour on Saturday night.
- The Boarders’ Trip to Oxford on Sunday presented the opportunity to indulge in both culture and retail therapy.
- The Sixth Form Social on Sunday evening was enjoyed by all who attended.
- Classics pupils have been busy visiting the Literature Festival this week: they have been challenged by historian Tom Holland’s exploration of the influence of Christianity on the western world (and beyond), entertained by Oxford professor, Armand d’ Angour’s warm portrait of Socrates, and captivated by Professor Mary Beard’s exploration of the work of the Roman poet, Lucretius.
- Education Question Time hosted by Jeremy Vine in the Bacon Theatre on Thursday evening drew in a very appreciative audience.
- U16 Girls’ Hockey Team beat Malvern College 4-0 in their National Cup game on Thursday afternoon.
- The Remove Geographers had a very successful 2-day Field Trip to Swanage.
- Lower 6th Historians visited Gloucester Cathedral.
- Wednesday saw the screening of ‘Beijing Bicycle’.
Choral Evensong, Tewkesbury Abbey
Sunday 13 October, 5pm
We are delighted that the Chamber Choir has been invited to sing evensong at Tewkesbury Abbey this Sunday and we would love to invite parents and friends to come and join us at this very special venue.
Tuesday 15 & Wednesday 16 October
After the success of Blackadder Goes Forth last year a pupil-led production of Blackadder 2 will be performed by an all ages cast of Senior School pupils on Tuesday and Wednesday 15th and 16th October at 7.15pm in the Bacon Theatre.
Everyone welcome, no need to book tickets, but don’t miss out! It promises to be hugely entertaining.
The performance will be free of charge but there will be a retiring collection for charity.
Pupils Driving Into School – 6th Form Only
In order for us to ensure the safety of all our pupils, it is essential that we obtain certain details. If your son or daughter currently drives to School, or intends to drive to School in the near future, we would be grateful if you could carefully read the attached letter and then complete and return the proforma provided at your earliest convenience to the Front Office. We really appreciate your assistance in this regard.
Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Launch
This week we launched the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Programme to all the 4th Form pupils, which presents a really exciting opportunity. Please see the attached enrolment form as well as the Bronze Planner.

Parents’ Meeting: Upper 6th
Friday 18 October: Dining Hall, 12.00–1.30pm
Please find below a reminder of the meeting for Upper 6th Parents. Pupils are encouraged to attend the meetings along with their parents and guardians. Uniform must be worn. For any enquiries about The Dean Close A Level Easter Revision Course (April 15-19 2020), there will be a member of staff present at the meeting.
Remembrance Sunday Service
10 November, 10.50am
This Service represents a very important part of our calendar as we remember those who lost their lives during conflicts. We require all pupils to report to their Houses at 10.30am for registration.
Parents of Day Pupils are welcome to wait in the Dining Hall during the Service, where Tea and Coffee will be available. Sadly we are unable to accommodate parents in the Chapel for the Service due to this being a whole school event.

We extend our facilities and our expertise to all parents! Dean Close Services run weekly group Tennis lessons as an opportunity for parents to meet, socialise, improve their tennis skills, get fit and have fun. There are a couple of spaces still available in our Thursday Intermediate and Friday Advanced groups.

CHRISTMAS HOCKEY CAMP 2019
Get your EARLY BIRD discount before half term ends!
This December, we are running a Christmas Hockey Camp here at Dean Close and as always, it is open to all girls and boys. We are offering an EARLY BIRD discount of 10% if you book your son/daughter onto the camp for the full 3 days only. Early bird discount will end on Tuesday 5 November. There is no discount code needed, it is already calculated in the overall price for 3 days.

Easter Revision Course 2020
Our ERC 2020 dates are: Wednesday 15th April – Sunday 19th April (with residential students arriving on the evening of Tuesday 14th April).
This year the course dates will enable our Dean Close Boarders to attend and stay an extra night, at no extra charge, ready for the start of the new school term starting on Tuesday 21st April.
Places are available on a residential or non-residential basis and as always, we are offering this course to A Level and GCSE students.

Auction of Promises
Join us for an evening of fundraising and music. Get your Christmas shopping underway and bid on tea with an alpaca, a Christmas cake, a portrait sitting, one-to-one sports coaching or a curry at the Kents! Tickets on sale now.
The canapés will be prepared and served by our Upper Sixth Leiths group.

Parents, Staff, ODs, Friends, Neighbours – all are welcome to join the Dean Close Choral Society; an ability to read music at some level is helpful. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays at 7.00pm for an hour in the Prince Michael Hall (PMH). The rehearsal dates for our next concert are:

14th, 21st, 28th January
Afternoon rehearsal on 9th February.

Ultimate Activity Camps
Ultimate Activity Camps are back this October half term and will be here at Dean Close on Monday 28th Oct – Friday 1st Nov 2019.
- Days run from 8:30am until 5:15pm* (Extended Day Pass for an extra £5 covers 8am-6pm)
